Rob Lowe doesn't get why Nicole Kidman's “Babygirl” sex scenes were called 'brave': 'In our day, it was required'

Rob Lowe wants more sex in movies — and doesn't want it to be a big deal.
The 9-1-1: Lone Star actor lamented the sexlessness of modern cinema during a recent conversation with Kristin Davis on his podcast, Literally! With Rob Lowe. "Nobody has sex scenes in movies anymore," he said.
But when Davis mentioned Nicole Kidman's 2024 erotic drama, Babygirl, as an example of a new film that does, Lowe reconsidered his remarks.
"Ohhh… I've seen it. I take it back," he said. "It's pretty great. It's pretty hot. Babygirl's great."
Davis noted that while she hasn't seen the film, she's happy it was made, before expressing her disappointment that erotic films are so out of fashion these days. "I can't wait [to see Babygirl], but it's so unusual that we even talk about it," the Sex and the City star said. "We're like, 'Oh, thank God, someone made a sexy movie' — like it's an unusual thing now."
Lowe admitted that he's puzzled by the film's reception. "They're like, 'Oh, it's so brave. She's so brave,'" he said sarcastically. "She's brave because she has a sex scene. That's brave now. And in our day, it was required. There's the page 73 rule. Do you know what the page 73 rule is?"
Lowe explained the concept to his guest. "In the day, the sex scene was always on page 73," he said. "You get a script and you're like, 'Oh my God, how gratuitous. Do I have to be naked in this? Let me check.' And you didn't have to read the whole script. You just went to page 73."
The West Wing star said Hollywood often struggled with a conventional story structure around the page 73 mark, so writers would throw in a steamy scene to smooth over the narrative rough patch.
"That mid–second act — what do you do in the second act?" he asked. "Which is notoriously the toughest sledding in storytelling: mid–second act. 'I know. They Blue Lagoon it. Beach under a moonlit night.'"
He continued, "But now it's brave. So brave."
However, Lowe added that Hollywood studios seemed uncomfortable with too much sex on screen in the '80s, too. "Kim Cattrall and I did a movie called Masquerade together, which, I love that movie," he said. "It got good reviews, but the studio kind of dumped it because they thought it was too sexy. It was pretty gratuitous, but it was great."

Still, Lowe has admitted in the past that sex scenes aren't pleasant experiences on set. He recalled the laborious monotony of filming erotic sequences with Demi Moore in 1986's About Last Night in a 2021 interview with Yahoo. "They're not fun," he told the outlet. "They're not a hall pass, as much as you would like it to be. They're very technical, and usually very boring."
"I don't know if you've had to kiss anybody for eight hours straight," he continued. "It's not fun! It's not all you bargain for."
