Indian men’s cricket team captain Rohit Sharma is playing for the Mumbai Indians in IPL 2025, and on Sunday, April 20, he entered his name in the history books by becoming the first Indian cricketer to win 20 Player of the Match awards in the IPL. Rohit was awarded the Player of the Match award for his 76-run knock against Chennai Super Kings in the 38th league match of IPL 2025 played at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The POTM award against CSK is Rohit’s 20th prize in the IPL. He moves one ahead of Virat Kohli in the list of players with the most POTM awards in the IPL. The overall record of winning most POTM awards in the IPL is in the name of former South African batter AB de Villiers. During his playing days in the world’s richest franchise cricket league, De Villiers won 25 POTM awards in 184 matches for RCB and Delhi Capitals. He is followed by former KKR, RCB and PBKS batter Chris Gayle (22). Most POTM awards in IPL 25 – AB de Villiers (DC/RCB) 22 – Chris Gayle (KKR/RCB/PBKS) 20 – Rohit Sharma (HDC/MI) 19 – Virat Kohli (RCB) 18 – David Warner (DC/SRH) 18 – MS Dhoni (CSK/RPSG) Rohit opened the innings for MI in the 177-run chase on Sunday and, with the help of four fours and six sixes, scored 76 runs. He added 63 runs for the first wicket with wicketkeeper-batter Ryan Rickelton (24 runs from 19 balls) and stitched an unbeaten 114 runs for the second wicket with Suryakumar Yadav, who remained unbeaten on 68 runs from 30 balls. Surya, who is MI’s leading run getter in the IPL this year, hammered six fours and five sixes. During his 76-run knock on Sunday, Rohit also went past Shikhar Dhawan’s tally of 6769 runs and became the second leading run scorer in the IPL. In 264 IPL matches played so far for the Mumbai Indians and the Deccan Chargers, Rohit has scored 6786 runs. Most runs in the IPL 8326 – Virat Kohli (RCB) 6786 – Rohit Sharma (HDC/MI) 6769 – Shikhar Dhawan (MI/HDC/SRH/DC/PBKS) 6565 – David Warner (DC/SRH) 5528 – Suresh Raina (CSK/GL) Rohit’s super show with the bat helped MI secure their first win in the IPL over CSK since the 2022 season, and the fourth win in IPL 2025 also helped the Hardik Pandya-led side rise to sixth position in the points table.
