On Monday, Smith was charged with one count of supply dangerous drugs and one count of using or disclosing inside knowledge for betting.
Nine’s Michael Chammas reports the allegations centre around Smith allegedly attempting to buy drugs for his teammates while on a golf trip.

And in a new revelation on Tuesday, Smith’s former Tricolours teammate Victor Radley has also been named in the police summons outlining the allegations against Smith.
The drug allegation centres on a Sunshine Coast trip in June last year that involved at least seven Roosters players, during a bye round.
During their time up north Smith is alleged to have contacted a drug dealer in order to supply Radley with cocaine.
But Smith denies the allegation, claiming he was not even in Queensland at the time.
There are also no suggestions that Radley has done anything wrong, and he is reportedly not of interest to Queensland Police.
The betting allegation relates to claims Smith allegedly provided details of his first game at the Rabbitohs and the team line-up, including the role of star fullback Latrell Mitchell, to a drug dealer. Police allege that information was then used by the dealer to place bets.
Code Sports, however, reported on Tuesday that the “inside knowledge” betting charge relates to Smith allegedly supplying match information to an associate after Queensland police discovered messages on his phone, found during an airport raid.
Code suggests in the exchange Smith jokingly told a friend that he would score the first try in Souths’ clash against Manly in July.
Smith did not score a try in that match which the Bunnies lost 30-12 loss to the Sea Eagles
And in a statement to Code on Tuesday, Smith’s lawyer indicated he would fight both charges and plead not guilty.
“In respect to the matter at hand, through his solicitor Paul McGirr, the Club understands that Brandon was not physically in the jurisdiction of Queensland when this matter was alleged to have occurred, and therefore, we are instructed that the matter will be contested,” the statement said.
McGirr told Code: “Brandon Smith will not be commenting on the allegation in any way.
“At this stage, the matter will be contested. The allegation confirms Brandon wasn’t even in the jurisdiction of Queensland at the time of alleged offending.
“The police have been extremely professional in dealing with Brandon and myself thus far and the matter will need to be left to run its natural course without outside influences.”
Smith is expected to appear in the Southport Magistrates Court on September 18 after being issued with a summons by Queensland Police for “supplying dangerous drugs and using or disclosing inside knowledge for betting”.
The charges do not meet the NRL’s automatic no-fault stand-down policy with Code Sports noting comments from the Rabbitohs and coach Wayne Bennett that there was “no way” they would choose to stand Smith down themselves from their looming clash with the Roosters.
The NRL can still make its own decision to rule him out.
“We do know that Brandon has told Souths he will plead not guilty to this,” veteran journalist Phil Rothfield said on NRL 360 on Monday night.
Brent Read added: “I exchanged texts with Blake Solly and my understanding is they will not stand him down.
“As it stands right now he will play in round 27 against the Roosters and as you said Buzz he is going to fight these charges.”
The NRL integrity unit was reportedly notified by the Rabbitohs that Smith had been handed the charges.
The charges do not meet the NRL’s automatic no-fault stand-down policy, but News Corp relayed comments from the Rabbitohs that there was “no way” they would choose to stand Smith down themselves from their looming clash with the Roosters.
The NRL can still make its own decision to rule him out.
However, as it stands, Smith will be available to play next Friday, with Bennett telling Code he plans to pick him.
“We could stand him down if we wanted to,” Bennett said in his first interview on the affair.
“I don’t know where it stands with the NRL, it’s ultimately their decision whether to stand him down.
“He has been charged and he has to appear before the courts.
“The NRL has a decision to make because obviously another player (Roosters star Victor Radley) is now involved as well.
“But I’m not standing him down ... that’s not going to happen.”
Adding to the drama it will be the first time Smith has faced his former club since the Roosters granted him an early release from his contract to join their fiercest rival.
