Rory McIlroy compared to Roy Keane and Katie Taylor and Masters win hailed as ‘one of Ireland’s greatest achievements’

RORY McILROY'S victory at The Masters was hailed as "one of Ireland's greatest achievements".
But Ken Doherty insisted that both Roy Keane AND Katie Taylor are ahead of the 35-year-old in the pecking order.
McIlroy finally sealed the career grand slam with a sensational play-off win over Justin Rose at Augusta National.
He is one of only six golfers to have reached the feat, and the first Irishman to ever wear the green jacket.
And former snooker world champion Ken Doherty put his accomplishment alongside anything achieved by any other Irish sportsperson.
The Dubliner told Gambling.com: "What Rory has achieved is quite incredible.
"He's only the sixth person in the history of golf to achieve a Grand Slam.
"It was sort of the Holy Grail for him, and I was delighted.
"You could see the intensity, the pressure, the build-up of it all - and good luck to him.
"He's dedicated his life to a sport.
"It's one of the greatest achievements for our country, and for him, particularly in his own sport. It's a milestone.
"It was just sport at its best, that play-off, the final round, the ups and downs, the highs and lows, how it grabs you.
"When it grabs the attention of everybody, that’s sport at its finest.
"He's one of the most talented players that has ever played any sport. And he deserves all the plaudits that go with it."
However, Doherty does not put him ahead of Roy Keane OR Katie Taylor in his list of Ireland's greatest sportspeople.
Roy Keane is one of the country's greatest footballers, having won seven Premier League titles, the Champions League, four FA Cups, and four Community Shields with Manchester United.
He captained the Red Devils, as he did Ireland, with whom he won 67 caps.
Katie Taylor, meanwhile, is an all-time great of boxing.
After a celebrated amateur career that peaked with the 2012 Olympic gold medal, she took her talents to the professional ranks.
The 38-year-old became undisputed lightweight champion in 2019 and defended that title against Amanda Serrano at Madison Square Garden in 2022.
She added the super lightweight titles to her collection after beating Chantelle Cameron at the 3Arena in November 2023.
The Bray woman defended those belts once again against Serrano at AT&T Stadium in Texas last November.
And she will put those belts on the line against Serrano once again at Madison Square Garden this July.
Doherty added: "Absolutely [if he’d still put Roy Keane above McIlroy in the greatest Irish sportsperson ranking]. And Katie Taylor."
