After securing his historic win at the Masters in Augusta, Rory McIlroy jetted home to spend quality time with his parents, Rosie and Gerry. He achieved the career Grand Slam of golf, joining the exclusive group of only six men who have conquered all four majors - the US Open, USPGA, Open and Masters.
When McIlroy sank his winning putt in a thrilling play-off against Justin Rose at the Masters, he was visibly overcome with emotion. While his wife Erica and daughter Poppy were present to celebrate, his parents were noticeably missing from the emotional gathering.
McIlroy dedicated a special moment during the prestigious Green Jacket ceremony to express his gratitude to his mum and dad, thanking them for their unwavering support. During the ceremony, the 35 year old said: "I want to say hello to my mum and dad. They're back home in Northern Ireland. They did [make a lot of sacrifices for me], and I can't wait to see them next week. I just can't wait to celebrate this with them."
Upon landing at George Best City airport, McIlroy finally got to spend some quality time with his parents. In an interview with Michael Breed on SiriusXM, he disclosed why his parents hadn't made it to Augusta to witness the monumental occasion they were busy with something as life-changing as a house move.
McIlroy explained: "They said it was a good thing. They were glad they had something to do to take their mind off what was happening at The Masters.", reports Belfast Live.
"It was the first time ever that he (father) watched me play golf on TV and had to pour himself a drink so he was going through the emotions as much as everybody else!".
McIlroy is gearing up for the PGA Championship at his beloved Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina, where he's enjoyed multiple victories. Following that, he'll head to the U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, Pennsylvania, before tackling The Open Championship at Royal Portrush in his home country of Northern Ireland.
With the possibility of more major celebrations on the horizon this year, McIlroy shared what it meant to experience the Grand Slam joy with his folks back in Holywood.
"It was amazing to relive the week - and not just relive the week but the entire journey we've been on to get to this point," he reflected.
"Being an only child, I obviously have an extremely close bond with my parents, and to be able to share this with them was incredibly special."
