Rory McIlroy Reveals What Needs to be 'Figured Out' Ahead of the Masters
@Source: newsweek.com
Rory McIlroy, a four-time major champion, has faced his fair share of doubts and criticism, particularly when it comes to his performance at the Masters.Despite his impressive career, McIlroy has been unable to claim victory at Augusta National, leading many to question his ability to overcome the mental hurdles that seem to hold him back.Even the legendary Jack Nicklaus has weighed in on McIlroy's struggles, suggesting that the Northern Irish golfer has a "psychological" hurdle to overcome. The 6-time Masters winner shared with Williams at the 5 Club podcast, "You know, if you get yourself where you haven't won for a while, it's difficult to get out of that."These words of wisdom from a golf icon only add to the pressure McIlroy faces. However, Rory has proven his doubters wrong on multiple occasions this year.He kicked off his winning streak with a $3.6 million victory at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, where he edged out Shane Lowry by two strokes.More recently, McIlroy claimed the Players Championship title at TPC Sawgrass, a win that has reignited hopes among fans that he might finally slip on the coveted Green Jacket at Augusta National.But interestingly, on Saturday, the 35-year-old revealed he still needs to fix something before returning to Augusta.Following his second round of the Texas Children's Houston Open, he shared: "I wanted to see myself drive it a little bit better, which I haven't really seen." He acknowledged the challenges of driving at Memorial Park, saying, "It's hard here because, you know, it's so wide that it entices you to just stand up and try to hit it as hard as you can, so accuracy isn't a premium at all this week." "I felt I was a little tentative with some chips at Sawgrass, but chipping's been really good this week. I scrambled well, so that's been good to see."He continued, "I still feel like I need to do a little bit of work off the tee and sort of get the driver figured out."Interestingly, McIlroy's struggles with driving have led him to switch back to his trusty Qi10 driver, the 2024 model, after TaylorMade's recent revelation of the Qi35 model.It was also reported that the 28-time PGA Tour winner even went to great lengths to get his hands on the Qi10, paying $995 to Uber one from his Jupiter, Florida home to Orlando. It happened after the third round of the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill earlier this month.In addition to preparing himself better for this year's Masters, the Northern Irishman also visited Augusta National before landing for the 2025 Texas Children's Houston Open.Are you counting on Rory McIlroy, too?
