Rory McIlroy snubbed by Donald Trump as US president makes decision

Rory McIlroy was snubbed by President Donald Trump, who hailed Bryson DeChambeau and Scottie Scheffler as the two best golfers on the planet right now.
Trump, who is passionate about golf, enjoyed some time on the greens with US Open winner DeChambeau at his course in Washington, D.C. Despite his challenges in the Masters and the PGA Championship falling flat, DeChambeau is still the World No. 10.
He recently secured his first victory since beating McIlroy at the US Open last year after winning LIV South Korea, his third title on the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund-backed rebel golf tour. Trump was full of praise for DeChambeau after their golfing encounter in the US capital last Sunday.
Trump said: "He is a great guy, a great golfer. Probably the No. 1 now, him and Scottie [Scheffler] are rated at the top. We play golf a lot together. It is not a very pleasant experience for me. I always consider myself a reasonably long hitter. Then I play with him. I go home and my wife says, 'Are you as long as Bryson?' I said, 'Yeah, I am pretty close'. It is not close."
Interestingly, Trump omitted any reference to McIlroy when discussing the best players, despite the Irishman securing the coveted career Grand Slam with his triumph at the Masters in April. McIlroy outplayed DeChambeau while they were paired with each other at Augusta.
It was a moment of redemption for the five-time major champion, having narrowly missed out to DeChambeau at last year's US Open. The LIV member is set to defend his title this month, with the season's third major returning to Oakmont.
While it's uncertain who Trump will root for, it's no secret DeChambeau is likely his favourite. Their history includes the golfer appearing on stage following Trump's second presidential term victory.
DeChambeau has also welcomed Trump onto his YouTube channel for a round of golf, a video that has racked up 15 million views since its release last July. In an interview earlier this year with the Times, DeChambeau said: "I've known him for more than eight years and we've developed a friendship.
"It's been fun to get to know who he truly is rather than what people think and see of him. That's what we were trying to do when we had him on 'Break 50'.
"We didn't make it political, we made it about golf and entertainment and raised a quarter of a million for charity. I try to keep space, but if he wants to play golf, we'll play golf. He's good with people he trusts."
