Rory McIlroy 'spending £14m' as Erica Stoll 'makes big decision on relationship'

Rory McIlroy is reportedly building a home in the UK following claims that his wife Erica Stoll wishes to leave their Florida base.
The golfer, 35, is celebrating a career grand slam after winning the Masters in dramatic style on Sunday. McIlroy was visibly emotional after narrowly defeating Justin Rose in a playoff, achieving his dream of wearing the Green Jacket in his 17th attempt and ending an 11-year wait for his fifth major triumph.
McIlroy was supported by his wife and four-year-old daughter, Poppy, at Augusta. McIlroy and Stoll’s relationship has been in the spotlight since the PGA Tour star filed for divorce last May before the couple reconciled a month later.
The pair began dating in 2015 and got married in County Mayo two years later. The McIlroy family primarily lives in their nine-bedroom Florida mansion, located in the gated Bear’s Club golf estate in Jupiter. The property sits on 2.4 acres and includes an infinity pool, tennis court, and gym.
Despite the glamorous lifestyle, McIlroy previously admitted that Stoll was keen to spend more time away from the Sunshine State. “If it was up to her [Erica], she wouldn't move to England straightaway, but she definitely wants to spend more time there,” he said on the Netflix docuseries Full Swing.
Recalling a chance meeting with Stoll, German golfer Martin Kaymer recounted that McIlroy's wife had told him: ''I really don't like the sun [in Florida]." To which, Kaymer jokingly replied: '"Your state's called the Sunshine State, right?"'.
Upon their reconciliation last June, McIlroy referenced a fresh start for the family in a statement to the Guardian. "There have been rumours about my personal life recently, which is unfortunate. Responding to each rumour is a fool's game,” he said. "Over the past weeks, Erica and I have realised that our best future was as a family together. Thankfully, we have resolved our differences and look forward to a new beginning."
Last year, it was reported that McIlroy had bought a plot in Wentworth, Surrey, prior to filing divorce papers, and had already spent huge sums on building a property. GB News has since claimed that Stoll has made a decision and believes a move to the UK would benefit their family, although no timeline has been placed on them possibly leaving the US.
In a report detailing the Wentworth house plans around the time McIlroy filed for divorce, a source told The Sun: “Rory could easily have seen the family’s future at Wentworth and in London — at least up until recently. He had spent between £10million and £14million on plans for the home at Wentworth, which he was having built to their specifications.”
A new-build property in England would fulfil Stoll’s aforementioned wish to spend more time in the UK. Although it is not known whether the McIlroy family would switch from their primary home in Florida, golfer JJ Spaun recently provided insight on the new Masters champion’s plan for the future.
Spaun lost to McIlroy in a playoff at the Players Championship last month, and the American has shed light on their conversations across the course. “He's super cool. We were talking about the UK,” Spaun told the Fore Play podcast.
“I know he's Northern Irish, but I asked him if he ever hangs out in London. Because my wife has got a really good friend that lives out there and loves going there so over the last couple of years, we go on this little vacation in December to the Cotswolds.
“Little quaint villages that are really old, and they have pubs from like the 1700s. It is just a really cool vibe to hang out during the holidays.
“I asked him about that, and he said, "Oh yeah, I'm building a house out there". He kept it really friendly and light, and then we chatted a lot until the back nine, and that was it.”
McIlroy previously had a home in County Down, which he sold to TV presenter Gary McCausland in 2013, before moving to Florida. The golfer still owns a house in his hometown of Holywood and a California mansion, as well as properties in New York and the UAE.
