Rory McIlroy takes part in secret experiment in bid to finally end Masters wait
@Source: mirror.co.uk
Rory McIlory has literally locked himself away in an effort to build a new swing as he eyes the first Masters title of his career. The Northern Irishman has enjoyed huge success over the past decade having won three of golf's major tournaments - albeit with his last coming more than a decade ago. But there is still one thing that alludes to the 35-year-old: The Masters . He infamously led the tournament by four strokes in 2011 - only to suffer a back-nine meltdown to ultimately finish 10 shots adrift. He also came close in 2022 having finished second behind Scottie Scheffler . In total he has four major titles, but hasn't tasted success at one of the big four since his second PGA Championship in 2014. And since then, there have been a string of heartbreaking misses. Last year, his long wait look certain to be ending as he held a two-shot lead with four to play at the US Open only to bogey three of his remaining holes, missing two short putts on 16 and 18. But he has now taken action to finally end his Masters and major hoodoo by literally deconstructing and rebuilding his swing. Speaking to talkSPORT , Chad Mumm, the executive producer of Netflix documentary Full Swing said: “I got to spend a little bit of time with Rory in the offseason. And it was interesting, because he was in the middle of a pretty rigorous reworking of his swing.” Explaining exactly what McIlroy was doing to re-work his swing, Mumm added: “The month that we were filming Happy Gilmore in New Jersey, he was not watching his ball flight, which I thought was really fascinating. “Actually, I invited him out to go play some golf on one of the off days of filming movies, and a couple of the other players had come out. And he's like, ‘Look, I'm rebuilding my swing. I'd love to come, but I'm literally locking myself in a simulator at night, turning the simulator off, filming my swing from behind, and just looking at the motion. If I see my ball flying through the air, I'll start going back to the old ways. “And so he took a month to rebuild it and he came back and, all of a sudden, here he is … seemingly in total control of his game.” Who will win the 2025 Masters? Share your prediction in the comments below McIlroy himself has already opened up on the process he has gone through to change his swing, having attempted to add more power. Speaking in November last year, he said: "The only way I was going to make a change, or at least move in the right direction, with my swing was to lock myself in a studio and not see the ball flight for a bit and just focus entirely on the movement. "It's something," he added, "just to make my golf swing more efficient, and then if it is more efficient, then it means it's not going to break down as much under pressure. If I look at my year, the one thing that I would criticize myself on is the fact that I've had these chances to win." It appears that McIlroy’s work behind the scenes has already paid dividends. The world ’s number 2 ranked player has already won the Players Championship and AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am this season.
