Rory McIlroy's Divorce Drama Has Golfers Buzzing in Trailer for New Season of Netflix's “Full Swing”

Rory McIlroy’s personal life takes center stage in the new season of the Netflix docuseries Full Swing. In a trailer released on Wednesday, Feb. 12, the pro golfer is seen seemingly alluding to the news of his divorce (and then subsequent reconciliation) with his wife of seven years, Erica Stoll. “I’ve struggled with trying to be the best golfer, the best husband, the best dad,” McIlroy, 35, says in a confessional. In another scene, golfers describe the scene when the news broke last spring that McIlroy had initially filed for divorce. “Everyone’s phones just started blowing up,” one person says, while another adds: “Rory’s divorce.” As McIlroy attempts to play through it all, cameras catch him dealing with off-the-course matters. “The Netflix cameras are following me right now so,” McIlroy says while on the phone. McIlroy filed for divorce on May 13, 2024, but less than a month later, on Tuesday, June 11, McIlroy's attorney filed a notice of voluntary dismissal on behalf of the golfer in Palm Beach County Court. “There have been rumors about my personal life recently, which is unfortunate. Responding to each rumor is a fool’s game," McIlroy said, while announcing the reconciliation. “Over the past weeks, Erica and I have realized that our best future was as a family together,” he continued. “Thankfully, we have resolved our differences and look forward to a new beginning.” Stoll and McIlroy share one daughter, Poppy, who they welcomed in 2020. In November, the athlete got emotional while speaking about his family after his win at the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai. McIlroy batted back tears while telling Sky Sports that the support from his wife "means a lot" to him. "I’ve been through a lot this year professionally, personally,” McIlroy said, describing his championship win as a "fitting end to 2024" during the interview with Sky Sports. “It’s been quite the year, but I’m super happy with where I am in my career and in my life, and I feel like everything’s worked out the way it was supposed to," continued McIlroy, who told the outlet he felt "a lot of self-inflicted pressure" on the golf course. Full Swing premieres on Netflix on Tuesday, Feb. 25.
