Rory McIlroy's honest admission says it all as he chases Masters glory

Rory McIlroy is off to a flying start this PGA Tour season, already bagging two wins in just four outings, yet the world No. 2 remains his own toughest critic as he ramps up his preparation for The Masters. McIlroy has been the tour's in-form player in 2025, clinching titles at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and The Players, nearing the peak of his powers with The Masters at Augusta National looming next month. But despite his stellar performance so far, McIlroy was quick to temper the excitement following his second Players championship win last week. The Northern Irishman, who's set to tee off at the Texas Children's Houston Open on Thursday, admits there's room for improvement on what he showed at TPC Sawgrass, and he has been working hard on the range since. "I'm obviously playing well," McIlroy told reporters at Memorial Park Golf Course. "I want to keep playing well, so I think every round you play where you see good things, you're filling up that confidence bucket a little bit, so I want to see that. "Look, it was great to get a win a couple of weeks ago, but I still feel I could have played a lot better. I tried to poke holes in a lot of my game last week and think about things I could do better, and there were definitely things that I could work on or do better. "It's a good opportunity to go out and see if some of the work I did at home and I'm continuing to do here [has worked]. Hopefully, it's all going in the right direction." McIlroy's visit to Augusta National for a practice round on Monday before heading to Houston was a hot topic at his press conference, which was dominated by talk of The Masters. The elusive green jacket remains the only gap in McIlroy's career grand slam ambitions, and it's been over a decade since he's hoisted a major championship trophy. With the first major of the year teeing off on April 10, the 35-year-old has made clear that his eyes are firmly set on the here and now as he aims to compete for another title in Houston. "I just want to get a card in my hand and shoot scores and hopefully get myself in contention and try to win another golf tournament," McIlroy insisted. "It's not as if I'm playing here this week and thinking about two weeks' time. I'm here, I'm in the present, I'm trying to do my best this week and trying to win this golf tournament." The big-hitting McIlroy is confident that his game matches well with Memorial Park, adding: "The way it's set up, look, for the longer hitter it's a perfect golf course. It's sort of bombs away off the tee, then it requires quite a bit of thought from the second shot in. "The green complexes are pretty severe in areas and you have to really think about where you want your second shot to be and where the miss is and a lot of the runoffs. I think it's generous, it's generous off the tee, but then second shots in, it really challenges you to think about where you want to place your ball after that."
