Rory McIlroy's Snappy 3-Word Response at The PLAYERS to Fan Phone Controversy
@Source: newsweek.com
It's not every day that Rory McIlroy makes headlines for his interactions with fans. So it is no surprise that his act of taking a spectator's phone at TPC Sawgrass on Wednesday was brought up by the media at the first opportunity, which came after his first round at The PLAYERS Championship.But just as bizarre was the fact that the Northern Irishman didn't even want to hear about it. Three words were enough to cut off the inspiration of the reporter who tried to put it on the table:Reporter: Can I ask you about the shenanigans with the kid on 17?Rory McIlroy: No, you can't.The reporter's insistence on pulling the 4-time major champion's tongue was worthless. His response was to keep the conversation completely out of that particular context."I'm really happy that I shot 67 today," McIlroy replied to the follow up question about the fan phone controversy.Naturally, the identity of the spectator is already known.Shockingly, it was revealed to be college golfer Luke Potter, who plays for the University of Texas at Austin. The young man is ranked 38th in the world amateur rankings, but will make a significant jump when the list is next updated, as he won the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational last Tuesday, held just minutes from TPC Sawgrass.Potter did not blame McIlroy in any way. In fact, he took responsibility for what happened, claiming he learned something new at the time."Look, I just made a mistake, and I take ownership for it," Potter told Golf Channel, "I apologize for it. That's about all that needs to be said. ... It's just a good learning experience. Yeah, I apologize."The interaction between McIlroy and Potter took place during Wednesday's practice round. The Northern Irishman sent a ball into the water and the college golfer reportedly shouted at him in reference to his infamous performance at the 2011 Masters, when he shot an 80 in the final round.According to NBC Sports, the phone was later returned to Potter, but he was removed from the course after the incident.Rory McIlroy is out on the course as of this writing and having a banner day.Through 13 holes, Rory is 5-under on the day without recording a single bogey. He trails Min Woo Lee atop the leaderboard at The PLAYERS Championship.His performance on Thursday included seven birdies and two bogeys, but he also managed to save par at key moments. Such was the case on the par-4 15th hole, when he sent his tee shot into the trees but managed to reach the green with his next shot and avoid bogey with an excellent 35-foot putt that left the ball close enough to tap it in.More Golf: PGA Tour Creator Classic Sees Tiger Woods' Famous Putt on 17 Replicated
