Rory McKenzie honoured as Kilmarnock win testimonial clash against Ayr United

The pouring rain - and even missing a penalty - did little to dampen a special evening for Rory McKenzie as Rugby Park paid tribute to a club legend. The 31-year-old was honoured with a testimonial against local rivals Ayr United as his 14 years of service to Killie was recognised. Given a guard of honour prior to kick-off as he walked out with his family, he was also afforded a rapturous applause from the near 5,500 crowd as he exited on the hour mark. But he was denied a perfect moment when he saw a spot-kick just before the interval palmed away by United's David Mitchell. The hosts won the game 1-0 thanks to Greg Kiltie's long-range strike after a botched clearance in the opening minute of the second half. And if McKenzie himself wasn't on the scoresheet, it was perhaps fitting that the winger, who rose up through the youth ranks alongside him, was the one to find the net. As for the game itself, what little action there was in an attacking sense was mainly from Killie as they ramped up their preparations for the new campaign. Brad Lyons flashed an effort wide on 20 minutes before Max Stryjek produced a smart save on his Killie debut to deny Scott McMann moments later. New Killie striker Marcus Dackers should have opened the scoring five minutes before the interval when Jamie Brandon's delivery into the box found the frontman unmarked. He couldn't divert the ball beyond Mitchell, however, as the Ayr keeper made a fine save. They were handed an even better chance moments later when Brad Lyons was nudged in the back by Shaun Want. Up stepped McKenzie, but Mitchell played the role of party pooper by diving down low to his left and denying the man of the moment with a fine save. Having come to Ayr's rescue twice, Mitchell fluffed his lines in the first minute after the interval. He raced from goal to deal with a long ball over the top, only to send his clearance straight into the path of Kiltie who duly clipped the ball into the empty net from 30 yards. A string of substitutions from both sides stopped what little flow there was to the game, but Killie youngster Ben Brannan showed promise with his 15 minute cameo. His neat touch and delivery into the box was met by the head of Bruce Anderson, but the striker's effort was straight at Mitchell as the hosts searched for a second that never arrived. Killie's preparations continue on Tuesday with a behind closed door friendly against Ballymena United before the competitive action returns next Saturday.
