Roy Keane gives honest Ruud van Nistelrooy verdict as Manchester United icon is relegated
@Source: manchestereveningnews.co.uk
Manchester United legend Roy Keane has insisted that he hopes Ruud van Nistelrooy will be given the chance to try and bring Leicester City back to the Premier League after they were relegated to the Championship on Sunday. The Foxes knew that they needed to beat leaders Liverpool at the King Power Stadium to stand any chance of taking the battle to avoid the drop to next weekend. United's loss to Wolverhampton Wanderers all but sealed Leicester's fate and it was confirmed after Trent Alexander-Arnold's winner sunk the East Midlands club. After the final whistle, Van Nistelrooy told Sky Sports that he would like to remain at the club next season in the second tier and Keane , who played 132 games alongside the Dutchman, hopes the 48-year-old will be given a chance. " Ruud is a pretty honest guy and he is obviously disappointed but his message there was that he wants to get them back up again next season," Keane explained. "He obviously wants to have backing from the board and get on with the recruitment, the pre-season and start looking at plans ahead. His message there is that he is wanting reassurance from the club owner and maybe there needs to be some sort of statement in the next few weeks where they say that they are backing Ruud to get the club back up next year because it can happen. "There is obviously frustration, the lack of goals at home, there are definitely problems at board level, Ruud mentioned recruitment in January that didn’t quite happen. So there is stuff to fix and let’s hope Ruud is the man to do it. "It has been a tough few months for him but I think he has handled himself well but fingers crossed he will get that opportunity." It has been a season of change for Van Nistelrooy after moving to United in the summer to join Erik ten Hag's coaching staff. It was assumed that Van Nistelrooy was being groomed to takeover from Ten Hag and when the former Ajax manager was sacked at the end of October, the current Leicester boss became caretaker. However, it became clear that Van Nistelrooy would not be the next manager after Ineos' quick move to bring Ruben Amorim in. Upon his arrival, Amorim informed Van Nistelrooy that there would be no place for him in the coaching staff and the Dutchman left for pastures new. At the start of December, he moved to the East Midlands but in 22 matches he only managed to record three victories which made the Foxes' relegation inevitable. The Telegraph reported after the defeat to Liverpool that Leicester are planning crunch talks with Van Nistelrooy regarding his future.
