Roy Keane gives Phil Foden brutal reality check after latest England no show
@Source: mirror.co.uk
Roy Keane has fired a blunt warning to Phil Foden after his insipid display for England in Thomas Tuchel’s first match in charge. The Three Lions beat Albania 2-0 in a World Cup qualifier at Wembley on Friday, but Foden failed to make his mark after being given a start. Myles Lewis-Skelly was the main beneficiary from the match after opening the scoring on his England debut with a cool finish from Jude Bellingham ’s through ball. Harry Kane doubled the home side’s lead in the second half, but it was a fairly low-key start to life in the hot seat for Tuchel . While Tuchel was pleased to start off his tenure with a victory, he admitted his team were “too slow” and didn’t get in behind the Albanian defence enough. Foden and Marcus Rashford started in the wide areas, but were replaced by Anthony Gordon and Jarrod Bowen midway through the second half, with Tuchel saying he wanted “more impact in these positions”. Speaking on ITV , former Manchester United midfielder Keane rejected the suggestion that Manchester City ’s Foden might be happier playing in the No.10 position occupied by Bellingham. He said: “Listen, Foden won’t have that problem coming up about where he will be playing, because he won’t be playing [at all].” He added: “I think he might be lacking in confidence. He’s definitely off it. His club form isn’t great, but we know he’s got that quality. Usually when Foden is at his best you’re sitting there thinking ‘something is going to happen’, but I wasn’t thinking that tonight. “Usually when he cuts inside he’ll pick a pass out or get a shot away. He did none of that tonight and every time he got the ball I’m looking at him thinking ‘I don’t expect anything from Foden at the moment’. Wherever he’s playing you’ve got to affect the game in different ways and he didn’t do that tonight.” Ian Wright agreed. “That’s the point,” he said. “We know that Phil Foden can come inside and he can be very creative with what he’s doing – he’s probably got licence to do that. But like the manager is saying, people didn’t go past anyone, there wasn’t enough progressive passing and running with the ball.” HAVE YOUR SAY! What did you make of Phil Foden's performance? Comment below . The former Arsenal striker added: “There were too many sideways passes and coming back. We saw that with Phil and with Marcus running into blind alleys a little bit. But if anything, those two, I think they were fortunate to be called up with the way it’s going for them at the moment, even with Marcus having something of a renaissance at Villa. “With the way they played today, it’s probably something you’d look at and if I’m on the outside as an English player on the wing, I’d be thinking ‘I’ve got to step my game up, I’ve got a shout here’.” Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content.
