Rugby club fears floodlights out of action after bridge set on fire
@Source: walesonline.co.uk
A grassroots rugby club has been hit by a second vandalism incident in just over a week, which may cost it dearly. A river bridge near Vardre RFC's base at Maes Y Bioden in Clydach was set alight on Sunday, April 6. The incident, at just after 7pm, has created concern for the club, as an electrical cable, which powers its floodlights and a tea and coffee cabin, runs across the bridge. If it is damaged, it could mean the club is forced to re-provide the cabling from its clubhouse, which it estimates would cost "tens of thousands" of pounds. Malcolm Thomas is club secretary for Vardre RFC. He said: "The bridge was set on fire. The unfortunate thing is that we have an electrical cable that runs across the bridge and powers up our floodlights on the fields, and we a small juniors cabinet which houses soft drinks. What we haven't tested yet, since the fire was put out, is whether there was any damage to the cable. We're hoping there hasn't been, but until we try the floodlights, we don't know." WalesOnline previously reported how on Saturday, March 29, a group of people brazenly turned up and vandalised Vardre RFC's pitch with a quadbike and motorcycle. You can read more about that by clicking here. Mr Thomas said: "The quad bike and the scrambler did tear into the pitch a little bit. We've been over to try and repair it, because we were hosting two finals on Saturday for the junior sides. Thankfully, they were able to happen, but for some reason, over the last two weeks, we've felt the impact in regards to the scramblers and also now the fire which took place. "The bridge itself doesn't belong to us, but this isn't the first time. It is the second incident in recent times. If the electric is out, that means the training that takes place, particularly during the winter months, cannot happen. Similarly, any matches that we have midweek would have to stop, and on the Sunday mornings when the kids come and want a glass of water or a glass of pop, that would stop because we wouldn't be able to provide cold drinks to them, so the knock-on impact of not having electrical supply or decent pitches to play on is incredible. "These kids enjoy coming out, and if they miss one or two of the games, they may well not come back and then that hits the community. If there is an impact on the electrical cabling, we would have to re-provide that cabling from the clubhouse through to the pitches, and that would be tens of thousands of pounds. We started a GoFundMe page for the damage to the ground, and there has been some very nice generous donations to date, but if there is any more significant impact, we could have serious problems." A statement from Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service read: "At 7.14pm on Sunday, April 6, Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service crew from Morriston fire station were called to an incident near Vardre Rugby Playing Fields in Clydach, Pontardawe. Crew members responded to a small refuse fire located on the river bridge in the area. After fully extinguishing the fire, crews left the scene at 7.56pm."
