Rugby star who followed Louis Rees-Zammit to NFL waived by club after four months

Former Wallabies back Jordan Petaia has been waived by Los Angeles Chargers after four months with the NFL franchise. The 25-year-old former Queensland Reds star had gone through the International Player Pathway like Louis Rees-Zammit, before being picked up by LA. However, the former Super Rugby centre's future in the sport has been plunged into doubt having played his first minutes of a live game just last week. NFL teams are currently training for the 2025/2026 campaign, with pre-season matches throughout August. A hamstring injury has ruled him out of training and Chargers have replaced him with fellow Australian Thomas Yassmin. Petaia has struggled with injuries since he made his debut for the Wallabies as a teenager during the 2019 World Cup in Japan. He played 31 times for the Wallabies but could have earned many more caps if he stayed fit. The former rugby star turned down lucrative offers from Europe and rugby league to pursue his dream of playing American football, but he's now hit a major hurdle. He has now been retained by Chargers on their reserved list, and AAP report the hamstring issue is minor, with Petaia "unperturbed and assessing his options." Petaia received interest from other NFL franchises Atlanta, Cleveland and Kansas City after his Pro Day in Florida, so they may take a punt on the Aussie if he becomes available. Former Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Rees-Zammit has now returned to rugby after 18 months of trying to crack the NFL. He initially signed for Kansas City Chiefs in March of 2024, before being cut by the franchise before the beginning of the season. He was picked up by Jaguars and placed on their 17-player practice squad for the 2024/2025 season as their designated IPP player. However, Rees-Zammit was not elevated to play in a regular season game on one occasion throughout the whole season and decided to make a return to rugby last week. It's likely Petaia will try and get picked up by another franchise before giving things up. However, being a top level rugby international, he will no doubt be receiving interest from the new R360 league, spear-headed by former England star Mike Tindall. The new league, which is set to change the game forever, is aiming to poach the world's best stars from both codes. France icon Antoine Dupont and rugby league superstar Kalyn Ponga are high on the shopping list for the R360 bosses, as is Rees-Zammit. A selection of England and Wales internationals have reportedly provisionally agreed to join the breakaway competition, should it get off the ground. Players are set to be offered huge contracts with some deals worth up to £740,000 per season.
