Russia claims it foiled drone attack on Vladimir Putin's helicopter after Donald Trump's fury

The Kremlin has reported that Russian President Vladimir Putin narrowly evaded a substantial drone attack targeting his helicopter. During an incident last Tuesday, Mr Putin's helicopter was allegedly at "virtually at the epicentre of repelling a large-scale attack by the enemy's drones", but Russia's air defences intervened to protect him. Commander Yury Dashkin of a Russian air defence division remarked: "We simultaneously conducted an air defense battle and ensured the safety of the presidential helicopter's flight in the air." US President Donald Trump professed ignorance about the event when questioned by journalists on Sunday, stating: "I haven't heard that. I don't know, but I have not heard that." Nevertheless, Monday saw Trump lash out at Putin on Truth Social, labelling the Russian president "absolutely crazy". Additional evidence to back the claims of Putin's close call has not been presented by the Russians. Despite this, Moscow has recently declared that it ousted Ukrainian troops from The Kursk region adjacent to Ukraine, reports the Mirror . Trump exhibited frustration as combat intensified in Ukraine, where around 900 drones were apparently utilised in assaults between Friday and Sunday. Beyond his outburst on Truth Social, Trump communicated to the press: "I'm not happy with what Putin's doing. He's killing a lot of people. "I don't know what the hell happened to Putin. I've known him a long time. Always gotten along with him. But he's sending rockets into cities and killing people. We're in the middle of talking and he's shooting rockets into Kyiv and other cities. I don't like it at all... I don't know what's wrong with him." It is believed that Mr Trump had a two-hour phone conversation with Mr Putin last Monday - just a day before the alleged helicopter incident occurred. The US President ended the call feeling optimistic, stating that the "tone and spirit of the conversation were excellent." He added: "If it wasn't, I would say so now, rather than later." However, on Truth Social, an irate Mr Trump stated: "I've always said that he wants ALL of Ukraine, not just a piece of it, and maybe that's proving to be right, but if he does, it will lead to the downfall of Russia." On Monday, French President Emmanuel Macron commented that the Russian attacks "show the extent to which President Putin has lied to the Europeans and to the Americans." This led to Mr Trump informing journalists on Sunday that he was "absolutely" contemplating increasing sanctions on Russia, although no official announcement has been made yet. The president spent Monday morning at Arlington National Cemetery to commemorate Memorial Day, before heading to his Trump-branded Sterling, Virginia golf club where he spent the remainder of the day.
