DUSHANBE, February 10. /TASS/. Russia and Tajikistan understand they are facing shared threats emanating from Afghanistan and are cooperating to maintain stability in the region, Russian Ambassador to Dushanbe Semyon Grigoryev told TASS. "Moscow and Dushanbe are united in understanding the genesis of common threats stemming from the territory of that country," he said. Interaction with Tajikistan amid complex situation in Afghanistan and the increasing activities of international terrorist organizations in its northern provinces is a significant factor in maintaining stability in Central Asia, according to the ambassador. In October 2024, Tajik Deputy Foreign Minister Sodik Imomi noted that Tajik-Russian security cooperation "is more focused on the problem of Afghanistan." He called the events in that country "very contradictory". The minister said the ideology of religious radicalism seriously affects security processes in the region. Out of all Central Asian nations, Tajikistan has the longest border with Afghanistan - 1,344 kilometers. In 2021, following the US decision to withdraw troops from Afghanistan, the Taliban (banned in Russia) took control of that country. According to Tajik officials, militants of various terrorist organizations, including the Islamic State Wilayat Khorasan, Hizb ut-Tahrir, the Eastern Turkistan Islamic Movement (all three designated terrorist organizations and banned in Russia), the Tehrik-e Taliban Pakistan (the Taliban Movement of Pakistan) and others operate on the territory of Afghanistan.
