Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman are in the sailing business. On Thursday, it was announced that the two actors joined CEO Tom Slingsby as co-owners of the SailGP team, the BONDS Flying Roos.
In a humorous joint statement, Jackman and Reynolds said, “We’re incredibly excited to set sail together in this new adventure. Hugh brings a deep love for and pride in his home country as well as being an avid fan of sailing. He will also be bringing his overly clingy emotional support human along for the ride. Apologies in advance to Australia. No comment on whether we’re writing this in our BONDS. No further questions.”
The SailGP Championship, established in 2019 by Sir Russell Coutts and Larry Ellison, features 12 six-man national teams competing in 50-foot catamarans worldwide. BONDS Flying Roos is an Australian team that has won three championships in four seasons, with Olympic Gold medalist Slingsby as the team’s driver. The BONDS Flying Roos SailGP team will have their first competition with their new identity (and new owners) at the Mubadala New York Sail Grand Prix on June 7-8.
The team is Reynolds’ latest sporting endeavor. He purchased the Welsh soccer club Wrexham A.F.C. with actor Rob McElhenney in 2021. The team is chronicled in the FX docuseries Welcome to Wrexham. Since Reynolds and McElhenney’s purchase, the team has secured three consecutive promotions, moving from the English football league’s fifth tier to its second tier. And in 2023, Reynolds invested in the F1 Team Alpine, alongside McElhenney and Michael B. Jordan.
Elsewhere, it was recently announced that the Reynolds-produced John Candy: I Like Me documentary, directed by Colin Hanks, will open the 50th edition of the Toronto International Film Festival in September. “When you hear the name John Candy, your face lights up. He wasn’t just a great actor; he was an even better person,” Hanks and Reynolds said in a joint statement. “People loved his everyman qualities, but they didn’t know how relatable John really was. He went through the same struggles we all do, except now we talk about them. We are incredibly honored to have gotten to know the man better through this process and to bring the real John Candy to audiences starting with his hometown of Toronto.”
