Ryan Reynolds's brutal transfer decision as Wrexham star leaves club 'not by choice'
@Source: mirror.co.uk
Wrexham frontman Steven Fletcher admits he is leaving the club "and not by choice" as the Championship new boys make some ruthless calls with their recruitment and retention this summer. The Welsh outfit have completed the incredible feat of three successive promotions. The former Scottish international was a huge coup when he originally arrived at the Racecourse Ground, but the club have now decided to part ways, much to the player's frustration as he confessed he was departing "with a heavy heart". Fletcher has eight goals this past season as Wrexham achieved automatic promotion from League One, but he will now be on the lookout for a new club as Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney look to prep the squad for the second tier. They're one level below realising their ambition of taking Wrexham to the Premier League , but have had to make some difficult decisions on the way with the 38-year-old's emotion evident. He said on social media: "I unfortunately have to announce my departure from what I can only describe as the most magical club I have ever played at! In my 22 years of stepping onto a pitch, I have never experienced anything like this club." Fletcher had very much been used as an impact sub - all bar two of his 43 appearances came from the bench. He originally joined Wrexham when they were in League Two - proving his quality to land himself a one-year contract-extension last summer. Fletcher's announcement comes after goalkeeper Mark Howard – who had figured in all three of Wrexham's successive promotions – also revealed he would not be staying once his current deal expired. Co-owner McElhenney said on social media that seeing players who'd given so much leave was "the worst part" as he also added: "They are not just players on the team. They are my friends and people I admire". Wrexham, who are well backed financially by their Hollywood owners, have lofty ambitions and will continue backing them up. They've been heavily linked with a move for Jamie Vardy, who will be a free agent once he leaves Leicester this summer. It has also been reported that they're keen on Fulham midfielder Tom Cairney. The 34-year-old has spent numerous years in the top flight and could see Wrexham break their transfer record - currently at around £2million - to land his signature.
