Saginaw-area sports highlights: Caro, Cass City battle for the Thumb

Caro and Cass City did not disappoint in a Big Thumb matchup featuring two of the top baseball pitchers in the Thumb. Caro’s Xander Grice and Cass City’s Carson Anthes put on a pitching display but were not on the mound when Cass City came away with a 2-1 win in nine innings. Caro came back to claim a 7-6 win in Thursday’s nightcap to split the doubleheader. Xander Grice threw six innings, allowing three hits, two walks and one earned run with four strikeouts. Anthes struck out 14 in six innings, with both pitchers leaving with the score tied 1-1 going into the seventh. Ramon Zamora Jr. followed with two shutout innings for the Tigers before Cass City scored in the ninth for the win. Zamora Jr. led the Tigers offense with a hit, run and two walks, while Trentin Hessling hit a double and Wyatt Waterman drove in the lone run. Landyn Stine earned the win in the nightcap, allowing two earned runs and two walks in seven innings, striking out three. Stine also drove in the game-winning run in the seventh inning. Xander Grice paced Caro with three hits, including a homer and double. Max Grice added two doubles and three RBIs, with Zamora Jr. getting two hits and two runs. Hessling walked twice. St Girls Soccer Millington 7, Caro 0: Emmaleigh Peters scored two goals in the first half, with an assist from Grace Ehrmantraut, to give Millington a 2-0 halftime lead. After Peters finished off the hat trick with a penalty-kick goal in the second half, Millington got two goals from Savannah Bemiss and single goals from Ella Narruhn and Ehrmantraut. Makayla France and Narruhn added assists. Brooklyn Barden earned the shutout in goal. Bullock Creek 0, Ogemaw Heights 0: Bullock Creek and Ogemaw Heights survived the rain and a 40-minute delay, but their goal-scorers cooled off in a Jack Pine Conference tite. Audrie Stoltenberg made seven saves in goal for the 4-3-4 Lancers. Nouvel 5, Valley Lutheran 0: Rachel LeFevre and Claire Long scored goals for Nouvel in the Tri-Valley Conference win, with Julia Hamilton earning her fourth shutout of the season. Boys Lacrosse Heritage 15, Lapeer 4: Elden Wideman scored nine goals with on assist to lead Heritage to a Saginaw Valley League win. Brennan Denay added two goals and four assists, while John Ryan led the defense with seven ground balls. Josh Larsen made 10 saves in net for the Hawks (9-3, 6-2).
