Saginaw-area sports highlights: Freeland grinds out softball sweep against Swan Valley

Freeland earned a softball sweep, but it did not come easily in earning a pair of wins Wednesday over rival Swan Valley.
The Falcons improved to 3-1 with a 9-7 win over the Vikings in Game 1 and a 10-9 win in Game 2.

“The girls grinded out two nice conference wins tonight,” Freeland coach Michael Rybicki said. “The team is working hard as a complete unit, and that’s fun to see.”
In the opener, Swan Valley held a 6-0 lead going into the bottom of the fourth inning. Freeland scored five runs in the fifth to tie the game at 6-6 before the Vikings retook the lead with a run in the top of the sixth.
But Madeline McDonald keyed a three-run sixth inning, hitting a two-run double for the 9-7 lead.
Jenna Kowalski led the Freeland offense with three hits, including a pair of doubles. McDonald, Jess Meyette, Brynn Jaime and Grace Deshone added two hits each.
Chloe Bryce and Izzy Coffel had three hits each for Swan Valley, with Alivia Guilbeaux adding two.
In the second game, the teams were tied at 6-6 after three innings before Freeland scored two in the fourth and two in the sixth. But Swan Valley answered with single runs in the final three innings to cut the Freeland lead to one run.
Meyette supplied the Freeland power with three hits, including a homer. Kowalski and Sophia Price added two hits. Price, who earned the win in the first game, got the save in the second.
Coffel was a force for the Swan Valley offense, with three hits, including two homers, and six RBIs. Shiloh Charboneau and Layla Shanks added two hits each.
Reese 10-11, Bay City John Glenn 3-1: Breelie Louis had two hits on offense and earned the win for Reese in Game 1, allowing seven hits and striking out four. Ashtyn Frost, Sydney DuRussel and Keira Campbell added two hits each, with DuRussel knocking in three runs. Kylie Soper earned the win in Game 2 with three strikeouts and no earned runs allowed. Jaidyn VanOchten knocked in two runs for Reese, which drew 15 walks in the second game.
Merrill 15-13, Coleman 11-8: Merrill earned a Mid-State Activities Conference sweep, with Nevaeh Sysak getting three hits in the opener. Isabelle Lewis led the Comets with four hits in the opener, with Kendall Allen adding three hits, including a homer. Klaira Sysak had three hits to lead Coleman in Game 2.
Hemlock 13-4, Heritage 3-5: Hemlock and Heritage split a non-conference doubleheader, with Hemlock moving to 4-2 on the season. Carley Noyes earned the win in the opener with four strikeouts and no earned runs. Addison Stockford hit a triple in the first game, while Brooke Gustin drove in three runs for the Huskies. Lillian Martinez had two hits for Hemlock in the second game, with Gustin adding an RBI triple.
Valley Lutheran 12-20, Chesaning 8-14: Valley Lutheran swept a non-conference matchup Wednesday, scoring 32 runs in two games. Ben Diener led the Valley Lutheran offense in the Game 1 win with three hits, including a double. Axel Schuette, who earned the win, had two hits and drove in three runs, while Ryan Pittman added two hits and two stolen bases. In the second game, Pittman collected four hits, including two doubles for the Chargers. Diener, Jacob Grimpo and Bryce Patterson had two hits each for Valley Lutheran.
Girls Soccer
Nouvel 4, Hemlock 0: Kelsey Berthiaume scored two goals as Nouvel earned a key Tri-Valley Conference match, shutting out Hemlock. Claire Long and Hallie Beck added single goals for the 4-2 Panthers. Taryn Pratt made 17 saves for 4-4 Hemlock.
Midland High 7, Flint Powers 0: Alahna Beckett scored a hat trick for Midland, leading the Chemics to a 6-0 record. Midland took a 3-0 halftime lead with goals from Morgan Ludwig, Ameris Blumenschein and Beckett, who scored two goals in the second half. Lizzy Striebel and Elliott Hays added single goals, with Moriah Fulcher notching three assists. Niobe Marchalant and Ellee Arnold shared time in goal for the shutout.
Girls Tennis
Frankenmuth 7, Alma 1: Frankenmuth claimed three singles wins behind Sophia Grossi, Avery Rittmueller and Keira Larrison, with Alma’s Adrian Block winning at No. 4 singles. Frankenmuth’s doubles winners were Mylie Jacob-Mya Donovan, Louella Grablick-Madison Ford, Tessa Kirkpatrick-Roxane Chinery and Addyson Wilcox-Reese Whitman.
Hemlock 8, Caro 0: Hemlock shut out Caro in a non-conference match. Singles winners were Carly Siler, Victoria Hauffe, Anna Nurnberg and Lindsey Tausch. Hemlock’s doubles winners were Claire Beck-Allie Watson, Bree Bierman-Lily Wenzel, Alathea McMillan-Olivia Ann Chasnis and Emilee Strzynski-Kennedy Krabill.
Nouvel 8, Bridgeport 0: Marin Serier, Mary Beyer, Jveen Murad and Beth Garner claimed singles wins for Nouvel in its shutout against Bridgeport. Doubles winners were Holli Cook-Katie Kennedy, Cece Barrera-Maia Dill, Gabi Theil-Macey Hausbeck and Charli Hausbeck-Natalie Shaheen.
Chesaning 172, Birch Run 196: Chesaning claimed the Mid-Michigan Activities Conference win at Clio Country Club. Mason Reis led Birch Run, finishing second with a 42.
