Saginaw-area sports highlights: Midland rides no-hitter to SVL win

Brett Faccio wasn’t perfect Thursday, but the Midland High pitcher came pretty close. Faccio threw a complete-game no-hitter to give the Chemics a 2-0 Saginaw Valley League win over Grand Blanc, striking out 15 and walking two. Faccio needed some late-game heroics to earn the win, and Brady Vannest provided them. Vannest hit a two-run homer in the top of the seventh to give Midland the win in the first game of the doubleheader. Eli Kell added three walks. Grand Blanc took care of the dramatics in the second game, claiming a 4-3 win. With the score tied at 3-3, Grand Blanc’s Chris Worley hit an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh to walk off the win. Jacoby Lind suffered the loss, striking out 11 and giving up six hits. Vannest led the offense with two hits and two RBIs. Bay City Western 18-11, Heritage 2-0: Hudson Hammond had a hit and two RBIs for Heritage in the first game of the Saginaw Valley League doubleheader. Trevor Selk added two hits. Western broke the game open in the sixth inning, scoring nine runs against the Hawks. Brady Boelter and Brody Banning had Heritage’s hits in the Game 2 loss. Hemlock 15-12, Ithaca 0-2: Chad Brown struck out 10 to win the first game of the Tri-Valley Conference doubleheader. Mitchell Radosa led the offense with three hits, including a homer, and five RBIs. Brown, Gavin Schmidt and Dawson Doan added three hits each, with Landon Zastrow hitting a pair of doubles. Schmidt struck out six in the nightcap for the win, giving Hemlock a 6-0 record. Radosa had another big game with three hits, including a homer, and three RBIs. Schmidt and Brown added two hits each, with Brown driving in three. Hemlock has outscored its opponents, 86-9, through six games. Swan Valley 12-4, Fowlerville 4-6: Jason Hartley had two hits and scored three runs to lead Swan Valley to a win in the opener, with Colton Klein driving in three runs. Freshman Cooper Habina earned his first varsity win, striking out three and allowing one hit in three innings. Jackson Gebauer and Nolan Selaski had a hit and RBI each for Swan Valley in the Game 2 loss. Caro 12-26, Vassar 1-0: Xander Grice earned the win in the opener, surrendering two hits in five innings and striking out nine. Grice and Wyatt Waterman led the offense with two hits each, with Mark Warren driving in three and Landyn Stine two. Max Grice did not allow a hit or walk in three innings, earning the win in the nightcap. Xander Grice led the offense with three hits, five RBIs, three runs and two walks. Ramon Zamora Jr., Trentin Hessling, Waterman and Max Grice added two hits each, with Zamora Jr. and Jonny Clish driving in three runs each. Bullock Creek 9-19, Harrison 0-0: Palmer Richards struck out eight in five innings to earn the Game 1 win for Bullock Creek, helping his own cause with two hits and four RBIs. Mason Strayer was 3-for-3 with three RBIs, while Brandon Porcaro hit a homer. Strayer earned the three-inning win in the nightcap, striking out three. Jaxon Flowers, Caden Tate and Elliot Bass led the offense with three hits, with Matt Griese adding two hits and three RBIs for the 5-2 Lancers. Freeland 8-11, Beal City 5-0: Tucker Hileman allowed two hits in four innings to get the win for Freeland in Game 1, with Sam Kaylor earning the save with three strikeouts in the last three innings. Hileman also had two hits, along with Connor Lasceski and Karson Worth. Lasceski earned the win in Game 2 with four shutout innings and eight strikeouts. The game was called after four innings because of darkness. Jake Metiva paced the offense with three hits, including a three-run homer. Jacob Clawson and Worth added two hits each for the 8-2 Falcons, with Scott Reno driving in three runs. Bullock Creek 10-19, Harrison 0-1: Dakota Swift struck out 10 and allowed three hits to earn the win for Bullock Creek in the opener. Maybel Schroeder led the Lancers with two doubles. Samantha Swift earned the win in the second game, striking out six and allowing one hit. Caro 18-17, Vassar 8-4: Shayler McIntyre had four hits with two triples, four RBIs and four stolen bases in the first game. Caydence Curtis, Chloe Malloy and Brooklyn Osborn had two hits each, with Malloy hitting a homer and driving in five runs. Osborn earned the win, striking out four. In the second game, McIntyre hit her first home run with two RBIs and three stolen bases. Scarlett Fischer, Kayleigh Harrison, Osborn and Molly Salgat added two hits each. Aeris Berhends earned the win, striking out two. St. Louis 10-12, Farwell 0-8: Paige Luneack claimed a pair of wins for St. Louis, throwing a no-hitter with eight strikeouts in the first game. Halle Hoyt led the offense with four hits, while Ellie Katt and Morgan Leonard adding two hits each for the Sharks. Luneack struck out 16 in the Game 2 win, with Hoyt adding another four-hit game. Ellie Katt followed with three hits, including two homers. Luneack and Kenadie Henry added two hits each. Reese 8-6, Bad Axe 5-7: Reese split a Greater Thumb doubleheader, with Breelie Louis earning the win for the Rockets in Game 1. Louis allowed six hits and struck out seven. Louis and Keira Campbell had two hits each for Reese, with Sadie Johnson knocking in two runs. In Game 2, Jaidyn VanOchten led Reese with three hits, including a double. Louis, Campbell and Blayke Weiss added two hits each. Girls Soccer Birch Run 8, Byron 0: Sydney Fox scored seven goals as Birch Run shut out Byron to improve to 3-2. Stella Schultz added one goal and two assists for the Panthers, who were coming off a 6-1 loss to Ovid-Elsie. Lilly Serbus led the Panthers with four assists. Brooklyn Hawley made two saves for her third shutout of the season. Bullock Creek 3, Beaverton 0: Jillian Dast broke up a scoreless battle with 13 minutes left in the match with an assist from Jenna Nelson. Dast followed with a goal four minutes later off an assist from Jaylyn Holzinger, with Ella White finishing the scoring on a free kick. Audrie Stoltenberg made two saves to earn the shutout of the 2-1-3 Lancers, who outshot Beaverton, 9-2. Marco Marcet Invitational: Brett Magnus claimed titles in the 800-meter run (2:00.53) and the 1,600 (4:31.01), leading Frankenmuth to the title on its home track. Anthony Plana added a first in the 3,200 (10:06.5) for the Eagles, who finished first with 153.5 points. Bay City Western was second (133), with Caro seventh (36) and Bridgeport 11th (17). Frankenmuth also won the 3,200 relay (8:44.80) behind Jagger Clark, Braeden Conger, Law Sholten and Cole Pergram. Ithaca Blue and Gold Invite: Howard City Tri-County claimed the title with 138 points, ahead of second-place Ithaca (116). Ithaca’s Miingen Bertrand won the 800 (2:10.33) and ran a leg on Ithaca’s winning 3,200 relay (8:36.51) with Thad Whitmore, Brent DeSaegher and Jacob Manley. Pewamo-Westphalia Invitational: Alma finished with 379.5 points to win the championship, with Thomas Larson claiming the 800 (2:00.84) and the 1,600 (4:35.21). Aiden Fletcher won the 200 (:23.24), with Christopher Churchill taking first in the 110 hurdles (:15.82) and Brayden Truman claiming the high jump (5-10). Larson and Truman were also on the winning 1,600 relay (3:31.15). Girls Track Marco Marcet Invitational: Bay City Western beat out Frankenmuth for the Marcet Invite title with 153.5 points. Frankenmuth was second with 130 and Caro fifth with 49. Catherine Retberg gave Frankenmuth a win in the discus (110-2), with the Eagles adding a win in the 3,200 relay (9:46.71) behind Lucy Conzelmann, Elise Barden, Gabby Cleveland and Natalie Foltz. Ithaca Blue and Gold Invite: Ithaca won its own invitational with 139.5 points, with Mara Acker winning the 200 (:29.60) and Emma Dawe claiming the 300 hurdles (:53.50). The Yellowjackets claimed the 400 relay (:53.90) with Acker, Libby Maurer, Lizzy Nevins and Emma Rohrs and the 1,600 relay (4:25.95) with Madison Montgomery, Izabelle LaLone, Maurer and Isabelle Strand. Pewamo-Westphalia Invitational: Alma finished second with 212 points, trailing host Pewamo-Westphalia (379.5). Joy Evans won the long jump (15-9) for Alma, adding a leg on the winning 1,600 relay (4:23.15). Birch Run 172, Otisville-LakeVille 186: Sophomore Mason Reis led Birch Run to the Mid-Michigan Activities Conference win, shooting a 40 at Willow Springs Golf Course. He was followed by sophomore teammates Cole Beldyga with a 41 and Garett Martinus with a 43. Girls Lacrosse Heritage 20, Midland High 6: After scoring 21 goals against Lapeer, Heritage followed up with a 20-goal effort in a Saginaw Valley League win over Midland High. Breeghan Hamilton led the offense with 10 goals, with Michaela Hamilton adding five and Claire Starke two. Lily Huffman, Payton Colley and Lexie Brown added single goals. Huffman had four assists, Hamilton two and Jacie Murdock one. Hamilton also had two interceptions. Molly Baldwin made four saves in goal.
