Saginaw-area sports highlights: Swan Valley claims Pioneer Invitational title

Swan Valley spent Saturday in Clare, bringing home the Pioneer Baseball Invitational title. The Vikings opened with a 9-5 win over Clare, then finished off Cheboygan, 12-0, to improve to 8-4 and claim the championship. In the win over Clare, Brady Stephens had two doubles on offense and earned the win on the mound, allowing two hits and one earned run in six innings. Jaxson Hartley led the offense with three hits, two RBIs and three runs scored, while Jackson Gebauer added two hits, two RBIs and two runs. Beckett Goldensoph struck out seven in four innings, giving up no hits in the win against Cheboygan. Jack Lagan had two hits for the Vikings, with Colton Klein driving in two runs. Hartley and Stephens scored three runs each. Freeland 13-7, Elk Rapids 4-3: Freeland swept Elk Rapids, which is ranked 18th in the state in Division 3. Sam Kaylor allowed just two hits and no runs, striking out six in 4 2/3 innings in the Game 1 win. Karson Worth and Alex Schuette had two hits each for the Falcons, with Worth driving in four runs. Schuette and Jake Metiva drove in two each. Schuette earned the win in the nightcap, striking out three in five innings. Austin Hare earned the save with two innings of one-hit relief. Jacob Clawson paced the offense with three RBIs. New Lothrop 6-10, Caro 0-6: Wyatt Waterman led Caro with two hits in the opener, with Jonny Clish walking twice. Xander Grice had two hits and three RBIs in the second game, with Waterman walking twice. Alma 3-4, Breckenridge 1-4: Blaze Snyder struck out five in five innings for Breckenridge, adding a double, triple and RBI on offense. Gavin Corbat also had two hits. The second game was called because of weather with the teams tied in the fourth inning. Ithaca 2, Unionville-Sebewaing 1: Ithaca scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to top the defending Division 4 state champion. Emmalee Shankel doubled, and Maeli Akin followed with a walk-off homer for the Yellowjackets. Ivy Davenport earn the win with 13 strikeouts and no walks. Gladstone 6, Ithaca 3: Ivy Davenport struck out six in 2 1/3 innings but still suffered the loss. Maeli Akin struck out four more in 2 2/3 innings of relief. Highland Games Invitational: Heritage finished eighth in the invitational at Howell with 36 points. Grand Ledge won with 113. Grayson Byam took first for Heritage in the shot put (51-5). Chesaning Classic: Chesaning won the title in its own track and field invitational with 121 points. Heritage was fourth with 62 and Saginaw United 10th with 30. Zach Harland won the 100 (:10.98) and 200 (:49.72) for Chesaning, with Caleb Walker also claiming a pair of firsts in the 110 hurdles (:15.10) and 300 hurdles (:40.03). Heritage’s Nicholas Coleman claimed the 400 (:49.72), while Saginaw United took first in the 1,600 relay and the high jump with Blake Jones clearing 6-4. DeWitt Panther Invite: Okemos won the meet, while Freeland followed Zander Wheatley to a fifth-place finish. Wheatley won the 110 hurdles (:15.29), the 300 hurdles (:40.26) and the high jump (6-2). Girls Track Highland Games Invite: Ann Arbor Pioneer won Satuday’s Howell title with 93.33 points, with Heritage ninth with 43.33. Willow Mason won the 100 (:12.46), Jordynn Young the 200 (:25.42) and Kaya Arnold the 400 (:59.11), with Kayla Sheppard joining the three to help win the 800 relay (1:43.93) for Heritage. Leigh High School Invitational: Swan Valley star Sydney Kuhn added a personal record in the Elaine Leigh High School Invitational at Oakland University, winning the 800 in 2:08.73. Chesaning Classic: Shepherd won Friday’s Chesaning Track and Field Classic followed by Heritage (2), Chesaning (3), Swan Valley (7), Sanford Meridian (8), St. Charles (12), Saginaw United (13), Bridgeport (15) and Freeland (16). Heritage got wins from Jordynn Young in the 100 (:12.40), Willow Mason in the 200 (:24.99), Kaya Arnold in the 400 (:59.86) and Marisa Medina in the 300 hurdles (:50.17). The Hawks also won the 800 relay and 1,600 relay. St. Charles claimed a pair of first places with Landry Gomez in the 3,200 (12:43.73) and Macie Hafner in the high jump (:50.17). DeWitt Panther Invitational: Freeland finished fifth in the DeWitt event, winning the 1,600 relay (4:04.82) behind McKenna Koehler, Addie Seemann, Clara Kaczor and Karie Keefer. Girls Soccer Midland High 1, Traverse City West 0: Midland improved to 6-0, outshooting West, 14-3. The Chemics scored the lone goal of the game with four minutes left in the first half. Lizzy Striebel assisted on freshman Ameris Blumenschein’s winning goal. Niobe Marchalant and Ellee Arnold shared time in goal for the shutout. Girls Tennis Midland Dow 7, Birmingham Groves 2: In a showdown of Top 10 teams, No. 2 Dow claimed seven flights to earn a win over No. 7 Groves. Dow won every flight except the top two singles matches. Dow’s singles winners included Ruby Macheso and Anya Narayan. Doubles winners include Ayesha Middha-Norah Lacher, Tessa Wood-Sachi Togashi, Alexa Leiti-Elisa Costeux, Lauren Yao-Evie Samocki and Juana Gutierrez-Adelyn Wolford. Midland Dow 7, Battle Creek Lakeview 1: Lakeview, ranked ninth in the state, earned a win at No. 1 singles, with Dow sweeping the rest of the matches. Singles winners included Nishi Narayan, Ruby Macheso and Anya Narayan. Ayesha Middha-Norah Lacher, Tessa Wood-Sachi Togashi and Alexa Leiti-Elisa Costeux and Lauren Yao-Evie Samocki claimed doubles wins for the Chargers.
