Sam Thompson admits 'panic' as he shares truth of time with Louis Tomlinson for Soccer Aid

Sam Thompson has spoken out about being quizzed on working with Louis Tomlinson during this year's Soccer Aid, saying he felt 'panic' in the moment. The presenter and podcast host was one of the heroes of this year's charity efforts for UNICEF after he took on a mammoth challenge earlier this month. He completed a gruelling Match Ball Mission earlier this month, which saw him run and cycle a total of 260 miles from London to Manchester over five days. Sam suffered a torn calf injury during the mammoth task, and could be seen limping as he crossed the finish line at Old Trafford. It initially ruled him out of being part of the England team's playing line-up when Soccer Aid took place on Sunday (June 15). However, after finding out the new total which his challenge raised, which was over £2 million, Sam was given some minutes on the pitch to round-off his incredible charity efforts. For those unfamiliar, the huge Soccer Aid for UNICEF, created by Robbie Williams in 2006, brings the nation together to help children worldwide have the best possible start in life, so far raising more than £100 million. On Sunday (June 15), stars from the sporting world as well as stage and screen were seen reuniting for what is billed as the "world’s biggest charity football match". As well as Sam, also returning to Soccer Aid was Louis Tomlinson, with the former One Direction star rumoured to be dating the reality star's ex, Zara McDermott. A lot of attention was paid to the pair when they came face-to-face in training for the football match, before both being present for team England at the annual event. Now, in the most recent episode of his Staying Relevant podcast, which he co-hosts with Pete Wicks, Sam recalled the media day before his challenge saw him put on the spot when it came to his thoughts on Louis. "There was a lot of PR in the room…" Sam said. He told how the interviewer asked him, "Look, mate, I’ve gotta you know ask the question everyone wants to know… you know, what’s it gonna be like with you and Louis?", and Sam told Pete: "You should have seen the room!" “It’s silent and then everyone goes ‘Woah! Woah! Woah!’ and the room erupts – ‘End the call! End the call!'” to which the 32-year-old said he told the crowd, "No guys, I’ve got this." He went up: "I held my hands up like 'just relax. I’ve got this...' I went, ‘So, the thing is…'" which prompted laughter by him and Pete, who mocked: "Let me take it back to the beginning.. Sam continued: "I said, 'Look, it’s not about me and you know Louis, it’s not about who anyone's dating... it’s f*****g UNICEF, its charity and everyone’s gonna be there for the exact same reason it’s to raise money.' "'If he’s got anything about him which I heard he does, he’s gonna sit there and say the exact same thing like it’s amazing.'" to which Pete started to clap in support. " Sam went on: "The panic I felt though afterwards. I said it and I went, 'That's what I think. i don't know if I've said the right thing or not' and then I came off..." to which Pete joked: "How hard was it to end the call and hold back the tears," as Sam laughed.
