Sam Thompson turns to Jamie Laing for advice as 'full-blown panic' over charity challenge sets in

Sam Thompson has revealed he has turned to friend and former Made In Chelsea co-star Jamie Laing for some advice after feeling “full-blown panic” ahead of his upcoming charity challenge.
Thompson, 32, has been tasked with transporting the Soccer Aid for Unicef match ball more than 260 miles from last year’s venue at London’s Stamford Bridge to this year’s stadium at Manchester’s Old Trafford, over the course of five days.
Beginning on June 2 and finishing on June 6, he will need to run a marathon a day, as well as cycle, to ensure his important cargo is delivered ahead of kick-off on Sunday, June 15.
Along the way, the Hits Radio presenter will be visiting popular UK football stadiums including Goodison Park in Liverpool and Villa Park in Birmingham, in a bid to raise as much money as he can for Unicef.
Laing, 36, recently completed his own epic endurance challenge, running 150 miles between London and Salford in the same amount of days, so was well-placed to offer Thompson some pearls of wisdom.
Speaking to The Standard, Thompson said: “I spoke to Jamie when I found out about this and I was like ‘tell me about it, how was it?’ He said ‘mate, it’s pretty tough’.
“Me and him, we’re not athletes right? I’d never ran more than 8k before I started training for this. That’s probably I suppose why we got picked for these things because we’re not going to just absolutely walk the park with it.”
Ahead of this colossal undertaking - which will also be captured for a one-off special ITV1 primetime documentary - Thompson had the opportunity to visit Unicef-supported initiatives in Guatemala last month to see first-hand how funds raised are helping children.
The former I’m A Celebrity winner visited the Juego Limpio Fair Play football programme in Solola, giving children a safe space to play and learn through sport.
He also went to an early development Centre in Solola, providing toddlers with early education and a respite for parents doing all they can to provide for their families.
During his visit, the This Morning regular felt a particular “bond” after being introduced to a little girl called Dany, three.
He said: “Dany is three year’s old, there’s no girlband there. She’s helping her mum do the washing and she’s living with nothing. She tipped out a toy boy and there were more cockroaches than toys! But she’s got so much happiness
“She was really talkative, really amazingly sweet with me, [but] before she joined the early development centre with Unicef, she barely spoke apparently and her motor skills weren’t very well developed and then within like a year she’s just this radiant human being at three year’s old.”
He continued: “The conditions are absolutely terrible but the hope in these kids eyes, if they even had a fraction of the help that I’d had in my life, then they’d be the prime minister!
“How far could they go if they had just a little bit? That’s what Unicef is doing so if I could just do my bit then I would be over the moon.”
Thompson is also set to take part in his second Soccer Aid, but whether or not he will play any actual football this time remains to be seen.
The Staying Relevant podcast host added: “I don’t know how much playing I’m going to be doing, obviously it depends on the legs, but I’d love to get out there. Even it’s just for 10 minutes, it’s just for the best cause.”
You can get behind Thompson and donate to his Match Ball Mission for Soccer Aid for Unicef now, by visiting https://www.socceraid.org.uk/challenge
This year, thanks to the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation, every donation made to Soccer Aid for Unicef will be doubled – up to £5 million.
