Competing at 138 pounds, the junior scored a 6-4 victory in the finals to capture the gold medal at the California state championships in Bakersfield. She had two pins and three wins by decision.

Hitting three 3-point field goals, Mendez scored 22 points and hustled for nine rebounds as the Aztecs captured the Open Division with a 53-45 win over Carlsbad, avenging last year’s loss.
