The San Francisco Giants prepare to head on the road to play the Arizona Diamondbacks in Cactus League action today. The Giants have a five-win, three-loss, and three-tie record so far this spring. Last year they finished 80-82 in fourth place in the National League West 18 games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers. Before today’s match-up, they announced three roster moves. RHP – Evan Gates The Giants have assigned Gates to the roster ahead of today’s game. Last season Gates pitched in 39 games. He played between Double-A with the Richmond Fly Squirrels and Triple-A with the Sacramento River Cats. He finished the year with a three-win and one-loss record over 70.1 innings worked. He had an ERA of 4.22 to go along with a 1.42 WHIP. He struck out 71 batters in those 70.1 innings worked. OF – Marco Luciano The Giants have optioned Luciano to Triple-A with the Sacramento River Cats ahead of today’s game. Luciano spent 27 games last season up with the big league club. he had a batting average of .211 with a slash line of .259/.303/.562 during that time. He played 83 games in Triple-A last season with the River Cats and had a .250 batting average with 10 home runs, 42 RBIs, and a slash line of .380/.380/.760. RHP – Mason Black The Giants have optioned Black to Triple-A to play with the Sacramento River Cats before today’s game. Black appeared in nine games last year for the Giants making eight starts. He pitched in 36.1 innings with a one-win and five-loss record. He had a 6.44 ERA and a 1.68 WHIP. He made 20 additional starts in Triple-A with the River Cats earning a five-win, and six-loss record. In 84.1 innings worked he had a 4.59 ERA, 87 strikeouts, and a 1.39 WHIP. As Spring Training continues, more of these moves will occur. They will send players to their minor league camps to prepare for their season with their team. The Giants are hoping for a bounce-back season in a very competitive National League West. They have to compete with teams like the Los Angeles Dodgers, San Diego Padres, and the Arizona Diamondbacks.
