A schoolgirl footballer died from 'head injuries' after she was struck by an electric BMW which ploughed through fencing and landed on the pitch, an inquest has heard. Poppy Atkinson, 10, died on artificial turf at Kendal Rugby Union Club, Cumbria, after the vehicle lost control on March 3 this year, also injuring another girl. Acting coroner for Cumbria, Miss Kirsty Gomersal, opened and adjourned the inquest this morning into the death of Poppy - whose funeral took place yesterday in her home town of Kendal. Her parents Ben and Clare did not attend the short three minute hearing, but were represented by their solicitor Miss Emily Taylor. Poppy, who played with the under-12s team at Kendal United and also played at county level, was training with other football teams when the tragedy occurred. Cockermouth Coroner's Court heard Poppy's death was confirmed by paramedics at 5.12pm. PC Curtis Westworth attended the Royal Lancashire Infirmary, in Lancaster, with Poppy's parents the following day, March 6, where they formally identified their daughter's body. Miss Gomersal said a post mortem found Poppy died from; 1A, head injuries. 'The brief circumstances of Poppy's death are well publicised,' she added. 'Poppy was struck by a car during football training at the Kendal Rugby Union Club, in Kendal, on 5 March, 2025. 'Her death was confirmed by paramedics at 17.12.' Cumbria Police are continuing to probe the circumstances of Poppy's death and the 40 year old driver of the car was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. Miss Gomersal said: 'I understand police have ongoing enquiries into her death and it is my judgement that I exercise my discretion to suspend the investigation and inquest into Poppy's death until the conclusion of the police enquiries.' The coroner described Poppy's death as 'tragic' and addressing Miss Taylor, asked her to pass on her condolences to the young footballer's parents. Outside court Miss Taylor said: 'I am representing the family as regards to the coronial and civil proceeding, but obviously we know nothing more at this stage.' A 40-year-old man from Lancaster arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving was later released from custody. Cumbria Constabulary previously said the collision was not thought to be a deliberate act, with an eight-year-old girl was also injured in the incident. Part of the metal fencing on the all-weather pitch perimeter, near to a parking bay, was flattened by the vehicle. On Monday, the funeral of the avid Manchester United supporter took place in her home town of Kendal. Hundreds lined the streets, many dressed in red at the family's request, to pay their respects. An artist's impression on her coffin showed the youngster with a football by her side in a poppy field looking ahead to Old Trafford's "Theatre of Dreams" stadium with the sun on the horizon. Following Poppy's death, her family said the schoolgirl, who was in the under-12s team at Kendal United and also played at county level, was '100 per cent determined to be a professional footballer'. They added: 'Many who know her, and who know her determination to improve and win, had no doubt she would achieve her goal to one day to play for Manchester United. 'Poppy touched so many lives, it was easy to see why. Her energy, character, spirit and passion for football was infectious and touched huge numbers of people.
