Scotland is leading the way in JOMO travel, with its serene landscapes, peaceful lochs and unhurried pace offering the perfect antidote to modern burnout. A new study by FlixBus has named five of its towns and villages among the UK’s top spots for embracing the “joy of missing out”. JOMO, the conscious choice to skip tourist traps in favour of meaningful, slow travel, is gaining momentum. Forget the pressure to tick boxes or post perfect holiday snaps; JOMO is about connection, calm and finding joy in your own pace. The FlixBus study compared over 30 locations across the UK, ranking them on nature access, spas, wellness spots, sunshine, rainfall and search popularity. Scotland stood out, offering destinations that are low-key, high-reward. Scoring 55 out of 100, this iconic coastal town is more than the home of golf . St Andrews boasts six spa and wellness centres, the most on the list, including Kohler Water Spa. “Whether you are looking for deep relaxation in a toasty sauna or you are feeling daring enough to try a cold plunge pool, Kohler has you covered.” Nature lovers can explore 18 acres at St Andrews Botanic Garden or stroll the Tentsmuir Nature Reserve. Its university buzz also brings a lively pub scene, with Main Bar, Sandy’s and The Centurion among the student favourites. With a score of 53, this charming village is all about slow living. Wander the Fife Coastal Path, dip into the St Monans Tidal Pool, or unwind at Wild Scottish Sauna in nearby Kingsbarns. “The East Pier Bar & Restaurant is a top-rated foodie spot for an authentic local experience,” known for fresh seafood and homemade desserts. Baern Cafe offers seasonal menus and guest chefs in a cosy, creative setting. This fishing village on the southeast coast scores 52, standing out for its rugged natural beauty and abundant wildlife. “For scenic walks and the opportunity to spot coastal wildlife, a hike through St Abbs Head is a must.” Dubbed ‘Seabird City’, the reserve is perfect for a peaceful retreat. Visitors can explore the lifeboat station, or enjoy seafood and local ales at Ebbcarrs Cafe on the harbour front. Ayr earns 51 for its blend of coast, culture and calm. Known for its Robert Burns connection, the town offers sandy beaches, The Lang Scots Mile walking route and Si! Spa at The Gailes for a spot of pampering. “Offering breathtaking views over the sea, these trails are wheelchair friendly and deliver a true sense of relaxation.” The Blackstone Clydesdale Experience adds a twist with horseback rides along scenic trails. Nature bakery pairs award-winning sourdough with community art projects. Scoring 50, Arbroath excels in wellness reviews and coastal tranquillity. Lunan Bay provides soft sands and forest views, while the historic harbour offers a glimpse into the town’s maritime past. “Nowadays, the harbour is mainly used as a marina, and you can walk along the quay watching locals angling their catch of the day.” For eats, Marcos on the Shore is a local favourite for fish and chips. Weecook Kitchen serves creative pies, while Sacred Grounds Coffee and Smithies Deli & Gin Emporium keep things caffeinated and curated.
