Scottie Scheffler Draws Parallel from Winning the Masters to Being Arrested
@Source: newsweek.com
Scottie Scheffler was on fire during his pre-RBC Heritage 2025 press conference, offering insight on everything from putting the green jacket on Rory McIlroy's shoulders to his personal solution to pace-of-play issues on the PGA Tour.His presser even included a joke about something he had previously taken rather seriously, his arrest last year.Scheflfer talked about how physically demanding it is to win an event, using the recent Masters Tournament as an example. The World No. 1 summed up the physical differences between being in contention, and not."I'm sitting there on 18 fairway last week, and Rosie [Justin Rose, who was playing in the group ahead of him] was at 10-under," Schefffler recalled. "I'm thinking to myself, 'I'm going at this pin. I'm going to try to hole this', and then he makes it, and you're like, 'well, tournament's over. I lost.' Didn't win, lost, whatever.""I was looking at Teddy [Ted Scott, his caddie], and I'm like, 'all right, Teddy, I guess I'm going to aim at the middle of the green now.' He's like, yeah, aim at the middle of the green. Let's get out of here.'"It was then that the (up to that moment) defending champion of the Masters had everyone in stitches."For instance, if Rosie misses that putt and I hole it, huge adrenaline rush, and that takes something out of you. Kind of like the adrenaline rush you get from getting arrested. It takes something out of you. [Laughter.]"As you may recall, Scheffler was arrested at the PGA Championship in Louisville, Kentucky last year. He was on his way to Valhalla Golf Club to play in the second round of the season's second major. It was one of the biggest storylines of the 2024 season, and it ended with Scheffler being released and all charges against him dropped in less than a week.Scheffler arrived on the 18th tee of the fourth round this past Sunday at 8-under, two shots behind Justin Rose. He hit the fairway with his tee shot and, if the Englishman had par or worse on the 18th, he had a chance to tie or even beat him by trying to hole out with his second shot.However, Rose did make birdie the 18th, which was enough to leave Scheffler with no chance of catching him. It was also good for him to eventually tie Rory McIlroy for the lead and force a playoff to compete for the title.Scheffler ended up making par on the 18th and finished the event in fourth place.The Ridgewood, New Jersey native also compared his fitness level after his win at Augusta National in 2024 to the way he ended last week."As far as being spent, I'm not nearly as spent as I was last year," he said. "The party on Sunday looked slightly different than it did last year. I still had fun with friends, but it's just a different feeling.""Last year, for instance, we flew home, was home for a day and a half and traveled and got in an airplane. That takes a toll on your body.""For instance, this year we hung out at Augusta on Sunday, drove over here yesterday, had some lunch, got some treatment, slept in today. Feel ready to roll."Scheffler is still looking for his first win in 2025. A year ago, he won the RBC Heritage by three strokes over Sahith Theegala at 19-under.More Golf: Masters ratings will turn Tiger Woods' head amid Rory McIlroy's win
