Fired-up Scottie Scheffler has blasted a warning to Rory McIlroy and roared: We’ll see who the best player is at the PGA. The World No.1 responded to the gauntlet being thrown down by the Northern Irishman after his winning of the career Grand Slam. McIlroy has also taken both the Players Championship and the Masters titles from Scheffler in a barnstorming start to 2025. However, the American charged back with a staggering eight-shot win at the THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson which sets him up perfectly for the second Major of the year at the PGA Championship which starts a week on Thursday at Quail Hollow. Scheffler admits McIlroy’s magic has fuelled his fires and said: “Anytime somebody is beating any of us out here, I guess you could say inspired, but I think we’re all fired up to come out here and compete. “That’s what’s great about our game. Week-in, week-out, we get an opportunity to compete and this week I was the best player. Next week I have off and we’ll see who the best player is at the PGA. “Rory has been playing tremendous golf this year and the career Grand Slam was really special to be able to watch. "I was glad to be able to be there for it and I think any time you are getting beat, you are always fired-up just a little bit extra to go out and practice. "I feel like my game is trending in a good direction and I’m excited to start the rest of the season.” Scheffler matched the PGA Tour’s 72-hole scoring record with his win finishing at 253 and running away from the field. The top-ranked player tied the mark set by Justin Thomas at the 2017 Sony Open in Hawaii and equalled six years later by Ludvig Aberg at The RSM Classic. Scheffler also amusingly recalled getting carried away with the Korean food at the event, which was put on by sponsors CJ Group. He said: "The food was really good. I did have a few plates on Friday! It was a long rain delay! There was twenty something chefs out there cooking a bunch of food and they were working really hard. "Some asked for an autograph and I’m not going to turn down someone who has been serving me free food all week, that’s for sure! “I had a lot of short rib, vegetables, some good grilled chicken and then some spicy chicken. I had probably a bit too much of that, but it was good!”
