Scottie Scheffler Vents 'Frustration' Amid Tumbling Down The PLAYERS
@Source: newsweek.com
For the last two years, Scottie Scheffler has been the master of The Players Championship, claiming $4.5 million with ease. His dominance at TPC Swagrass led him to score 20-under-par in 2024 and 17-under-par in 2023.However, this year's tournament has been a different story for the 28-year-old. After 54 holes at the PGA Tour's flagship event, Scheffler is hovering around 16th place. That is 7 strokes behind the leader, JJ Spaun (-12).But what's behind Scheffler's slump? Is his palm injury acting up again, or the pressure to join the elite company of Jack Nicklaus, who won 3 times at The PLAYERS Championship?Well, according to the World No. 1, it's the gusty winds behind his "frustrating finish." The Saturday round saw winds of up to 30 miles per hour, making it a challenging day for all players.Scheffler expressed his frustration, saying, "It was a tough finish for me. I felt like I did some good things there towards the end, and just the shots weren't going exactly where I thought they were going to."He added, "Hit some really nice shots that didn't end up where I thought they should have, and frustrating finish, but we'll see."A prime example of Scheffler's frustration during the third round was at the 16th hole. Despite using all his strength to aim for a good shot, the two-time major winner's ball landed 44 yards away from the hole."Can you explain it?" he asked, exasperated, after the shot. "How does the wind not move it at all that way? How does it all go up with the ball 30m/hr go up and go like this?," Scheffler said, pointing towards his ball.Interestingly, it wasn't the first time Scheffler's emotions had gotten the better of him during the tournament. Just a day earlier, on the seventh hole, he had slammed his club against his bag.Yet, despite his struggles with the wind, Scheffler has managed to salvage the 3rd round with three eagles and three bogies on the 12th, 16th, and 17th holes. When asked about the same, Scheffler shared:"You never know. Maybe do something crazy tomorrow. You've got guys shooting some pretty low numbers this week. So going into tomorrow, just try and get off to a good start and go from there."However, the challenge ahead of him is daunting as Sunday's forecast predicts even harsher winds, with gusts reaching up to 40 miles per hour. As a result, the tee times have been adjusted.With nature throwing everything it's got at him, can Scheffler overcome the odds and match Jack Nicklaus's Players Championship record?
