Scottie Scheffler will break Rory McIlroy as pundit claims only another freak incident can halt PGA Championship bid

Bullish Brandel Chamblee says only a freak accident and not Rory McIlroy will stop Scottie Scheffler winning the PGA Championship. The world No.1 had his hopes at this major handcuffed 12 months ago when he was arrested and stuck in the cell bang in the middle of the tournament. Scheffler then lost some edge at the turn of the year when he cut his hand with a wine glass trying to make ravioli. But Chamblee, a former Tour pro, says it’ll need something as ridiculous as an accident with a giant animal to halt his victory lap at Quail Hollow. He said: “It took one of the most bizarre incidents I’ve ever heard of, any of us have ever heard of [arrest] to topple him off of that momentum that he had going into the PGA last year. "It took an equally bizarre incident cutting the ravioli. If he didn’t get run over by a water buffalo this week from his car to the golf shop, I don’t know how they’re going to stop him. “Just looking at the numbers, looking at the state of his game, you just look at the run he’s on right now. There’s a sense is it the beginning of an era. "Is he on a two, three-year run or could this be a 10, 15-year run? In so many ways, he reminds me of Jack Nicklaus. "The tempo of his golf swing, the high hands, the way he releases the club and his consistency. The world rankings have been around for 40 years and you think about all the phenomenal players that have come through. “Seve, Bernhard Langer, Greg Norman, Tom Watson, Phil Mickelson, Ernie Els, Vijay Singh. Only two players have managed to have consecutive 100 weeks in a row or more. "Of course, that’s Tiger Woods , who did it twice and now Scottie Scheffler, 104 weeks. So dead-on two years. Rory didn’t do this, Norman didn’t do this, Brooks Koepka didn’t do this, Dustin Johnson didn’t do this, none of them did this. That’s how consistent he’s been. The devil’s in the details, but you have got give the angel his wings and these are the wings right here. “We’ve got two years of example. Scottie is the best iron player, he’s the best driver in the game, he’s inside the top 20 in putting. I mean, how are they going to beat him this week? He was a little bit off of his game at Augusta National, but I just don’t see how they’re going to beat him this week.” Torrential rain has softened up the course in North Carolina and Chambeee says that will also help Scheffler as he added: “I’m not sure there’s much that can slow Scottie Scheffler down when you hit it as straight as he does and given the fact that the rough is going to be more punishing this week than it typically is, Rory said it in an interview, he needs to drive it better. “He hit four fairways Saturday, five fairways Sunday. Rory has actually won here hitting 19 fairways on the week. I don’t think the winner’s going to hit 19 fairways here this week. He’s going to [have to] hit more than that. " Justin Thomas definitely scrambled beautifully around here when he won, but I think there’s a little bit more bite to this rough than there was in there. So there’s a bigger premium on finding fairways and that’s where Scottie’s just better than Rory.”
