Tavua Town will soon undergo a series of beautification projects, including the construction of a leisure park for senior citizens. This was announced by the Minister for Local Government and Housing, Maciu Nalumisa, at the weekend during the crowning of the Vodafone Gold N Water Carnival in Garvey Park, Tavua. Mr Nalumisa said 75 per cent of funds raised through the annual carnival since its inception in 2005 had gone towards beautifying the town. During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021, proceeds were also used to purchase electrical appliances for Tavua Hospital. He congratulated the people of Tavua as they prepare to mark the 20th anniversary of the carnival this year. “Congratulations, Tavua,” he said. “Upcoming projects include the construction of shelters at the taxi, carrier, and bus stands, the Garden Park sitting area, an upgrade of the children’s park, more litter bins in town, and other beautification works.” He noted that Tavua Town had previously won the Ministry of Local Government’s Clean/Green Town Excellence Award in 2012 and 2014. The awards programme will be revived before the end of next month. “This year, funds raised will go towards the construction of the Senior Citizens’ Park,” he said. “I also thank FIJI Water for stepping in to assist with funding the project.” Mr Nalumisa added that discussions on sewage reticulation for Tavua, including Tavualevu V illage, had resumed. Nine parking meters will also be installed in various locations around the town. He acknowledged Vodafone Fiji for its continued support of carnivals across the country. ” Vinaka vakalevu, Vodafone!” the minister said. Feedback: mereleki.nai@fijisun.com.fj
