SEPIK FC have made their entrance alongside the other six teams participating in the inaugural PNG Futsal Lague. Assistant Team Manager Sedrick Kaprangi, said all players are Wewak-based and are here to represent the province and accept the challenge from the other Premier Soccer League Clubs that have also raised their hands to take part in the competition. Kaprangi said Futsal is not new to them in the province having played it for the last 15 years. “Terence Hukahu is the one leading the team in the Futsal and introduced everyone to the code.” Hukahu heads the Futsal Association in Wewak, “all the players have grown up learning about the game, and are familiar with the skills, rules, laws and regulations of Futsal as they are taught through the game and Hukahu was part of a group of trainers that travelled to learn more about Futsal, so when he came back to Wewak, he grew the sport and now plenty have come through with experience from Futsal. He added that, they are proud of the boys for representing the province and also Hukahu who has gone out of his way and try to build the code over the years. “We appreciate him (Hukahu) for the talent and skills and we will prove that we can play futsal from Sepik and nothing is new as we play and we want to accept the challenge and as a province take on the PSL giants.” For 15 years we ran Futsal in the province and have built generations that have come through knowing how to play Futsal first. So, when we heard about the Futsal League we created a team from Wewak and headed over to participate.” Coach Phornica Nere said some of the players based in Wewak will travel at the end of this week. “We are three weeks into training, and the boys in Wewak we are training on the grass and the only difference is the surface and we are playing indoors and not out on the pitch and to use spikes, otherwise the boys are familiar with the game and grew up learning the game. The result will determine on how far we go out in the competition. We are participating in the Futsal and we are looking at hosting a Futsal Competition under Sepik FC, if the Futsal League is a success.
