Serena Williams' Relationship History
@Source: newsweek.com
As one of the best tennis players in history, Serena Williams has been in the public eye for quite some time. While the athlete has done her best to keep her personal life private, her romantic past came back under scrutiny after she danced to Kendrick Lamar's song "They Not Like Us" during the Super Bowl Halftime Show on Sunday, February 9. The Grammy-winning hit is a diss track aimed at Drake, who Williams is widely believed to have dated between 2011 and 2015, though she never confirmed the relationship.While the Grand Slammer has been happily married to Reddit founder Alexis Ohanian since 2017, she has been romantically linked to a few high profile individuals over the years.Alexis OhanianWilliams and Ohanian apparently shared a true meet-cute in 2015 when they were staying at the same hotel in Rome. Williams told Jimmy Fallon in a 2024 interview that she usually never went to breakfast before a tournament."But this time, I'm like, 'I don't care. I just need to get out.' So I went downstairs, but the breakfast was closed, and so, I ended up sitting somewhere else," she explained. "It was empty. Like, no one was there, so it was me and my trainer and my coach." Then, she joked, "this big tall guy [...] plops down right next to us." Not happy about being interrupted before her match, the tennis star tried to scare the tech investor away. "We told him there's a rat, like, 'It's moved. Be careful! There's a rat,'" she said. "There was no rat."Despite her attempts to push him away, somehow, Alexis won over the athlete and fashion designer. One year later, he proposed to her in the same place. As Williams put it in a poem she posted on Reddit, he asked her to marry him "where our stars first collided. And now it was full circle. At the same table we first met by chance. But by choice. Down on knee. He said 4 words. And I said yes." They married in 2017 and now share two daughters, Olympia (born 2017) and Adira (born 2023).DrakeThe rapper, whose real name is Aubrey Graham, was a regular fixture in the audience at Williams' matches and fashion shows between 2011 and 2015. Serena never confirmed that they were dating, but the "Hotline Bling" rapper seemed to do so when he said in a video, recorded at an unknown date and released in 2024, that his song "Too Good" was "about me and Serena." As he discussed his music with his mom Sandi Graham Drake described the song as "lighthearted," and thought Williams wouldn't "hate" him for it. Drake's mother seemed to be curious about if there was hope for a reunion. "And she is seeing someone else?" she asked, to which the rapper replied, "I don't know, Mom."Amar'e StoudemireWilliams was seen at several events with the basketball player in 2010, including a whiskey launch and a fashion show.CommonBefore Drake, the athlete dated another famous rapper, Common (real name Lonnie Rashid Lynn) between 2007 and 2010. Williams starred in one of his music videos. The exes stayed friends after breaking up, according to an interview the rapper gave in 2015. "We got a great understanding, and I care about her as a person," he told Meredith Viera. "It's not like every other person you talk to every other day, but you know, you still have that respect. You have love for them and want to see them do well."Brett RatnerThe athlete's first high-profile relationship was with producer and director Brett Ratner, whom she dated from 2004 to 2006. In the aftermath of Ratner being accused of sexual assault by multiple women in 2017, their relationship as recorded on the Williams sisters' reality show, Venus and Serena: Get Real, has been scrutinized for scenes in which Ratner told an irritated WIlliams to give him "some love" and "grabb[ed] Serena's face towards his."
