Serena Williams says Super Bowl halftime show cameo was 'absolutely not' dissing ex Drake: 'I would never do that'

No, Serena Williams wasn't trying to get her ex Drake in his feelings with her cameo in Kendrick Lamar's Super Bowl halftime show.
In a new interview with Time, the tennis legend reflected on her appearance at this year's big game, where she was briefly shown Crip-walking as Lamar performed his Drake diss track "Not Like Us" at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans.
Williams insisted that she was "absolutely not" trying to diss the "In My Feelings" rapper, to whom she was romantically linked in the early 2010s. "I would never do that," she told Time when asked if she was taking a shot at Drake. "And that was sad, that anyone would ever think that. I respect how they could. Obviously I can see how someone would think that. But absolutely not. I have never had negative feelings towards him. We've known him for so many years."
The athlete also noted that she's not sure if she totally stands by her appearance in the halftime show. "I don't know if I regret it or not," Williams said. "I don't know the answer to that."
Drake previously name-checked Williams in his 2022 song "Middle of the Ocean," in which he rapped, "Sidebar, Serena, your husband a groupie." Lamar then seemingly hit back on her behalf in 2024's "Not Like Us" — which explicitly calls out Drake by name — as he rapped, "better not speak on Serena."
Elsewhere in the Time interview, Williams explained how her cameo materialized. "We've been trying to do something together for ages," she said. Lamar appreciated that Williams represented their shared hometown of Los Angeles when she Crip-walked at the London Olympics in 2012, so he asked if she'd bring her dance moves to the Super Bowl stage.
"I'm like, 'Wait, what, you're asking me?'" Williams recalled. "I'm not Taylor Swift, let's be honest. I would have a better chance to be quarterback at the Super Bowl than dance."
Williams ultimately accepted Lamar's offer so she could rep her hometown once again. "Who would have thought that a tennis player from Compton would be regarded as one of the best tennis players of all time?" she said. "It was just putting an exclamation on it."

Williams also recalled witnessing the Super Bowl crowd boo Taylor Swift when she was shown on the jumbotron cheering on her boyfriend, Kansas City Chiefs player Travis Kelce. "Why would you boo her?" Williams asked. "That's so mean. That's just awful."
Williams added that she spent some of the Super Bowl evening trying to help her daughter, Olympia, secure an autograph from the "Love Story" singer. "I'm such a mom. I was ready to go in here myself and be like, 'Taylor, come get this girl,'" she said. However, she stopper her pursuit when the Chiefs' defeat seemed imminent. "It's hard when your team is losing," Williams said. "I totally get it."
