Sergio Garcia dealt latest major blow as LIV Golf star misses out on Open qualification
@Source: mirror.co.uk
Sergio Garcia missed out on banking a spot at The Open Championship on Sunday, after the LIV Golf star fell short of earning one of the three places on offer at the Asian Tour's International Series event in Macau. Garcia was among a number of LIV stars competing in the International Series event, where the top three finishers not already exempt qualified for the final major championship of the season in July. Garcia was hoping to play his way to Royal Portrush, but it was not to be. The Spaniard carded a five-under-par 65 in the final round, but this was not enough to earn him a spot inside the top three, with the spots instead going to a trio of his LIV colleagues. Jason Kokrak, Patrick Reed, and Carlos Ortiz finished ahead of Garcia and were handed the Open spots on offer. A missed putt from three feet cost the 2017 Masters champion dearly, as this saw him par the last and finish just one shot behind Kokrak, as he settled for fourth. Garcia's appearances at the four majors have been limited in recent years as the LIV setup continues to host events without Official World Golf Ranking points on offer. While Garcia has a lifetime exemption at the Masters as a past champion, he has been forced to explore other avenues to secure major starts elsewhere. The ex- PGA Tour star has shown a keenness to return to The Open in recent years, having entered final qualifying at West Lancashire in 2023 and 2024. However, like his week in Macau, Garcia fell short on both occasions and may need to return to the qualifying for a third consecutive year this summer. As confirmed by the R&A last month, LIV have been offered one spot in this year's Open via their individual season-long leaderboard for the first time. The top player not already exempt in the top five of the standings after the final round of LIV Golf Dallas on June 29 will earn a place to compete at Royal Portrush in July. Currently, Garcia is poised to take that spot, sitting third in the standings after a strong start to the season. The former Masters champion has already claimed a win in 2025, having secured the individual title in Hong Kong earlier this month. His Fireballs team have also been in hot form too, winning three of the four team titles on offer following wins in Adelaide, Hong Kong, and Singapore.
