Seven Wales outcasts get chance to revive international careers under Steve Tandy
@Source: walesonline.co.uk
This autumn will mark a new era for Welsh rugby with Steve Tandy set to start his career as the new head coach of Wales. Tandy's side will face Argentina, Japan, New Zealand and South Africa at the Principality Stadium this autumn before the Six Nations in 2026. The appointment of a new head coach should result in a clean slate for everyone and there will be a number of players who will see this as an opportunity of forcing their way back into the Wales squad. Here are just a handful of players who could come back into the Wales reckoning under Tandy. It has been three years and four months since Moriarty last wore the red of Wales but the 31-year-old's fortunes could change over the coming season. Moriarty was once a mainstay of the Wales backrow but a series of injuries and a stint at French second division outfit Brive saw the former Dragons star slip out of the international reckoning. But Moriarty's move to the Ospreys could reignite his international career, assuming he can regain top form. Wales' pack has lacked physicality over the past couple of years and there is a dearth of ball carriers up front. Warren Gatland used to bemoan the lack of a big, physical blindside flanker and Moriarty would have fitted the bill. One of Tandy's first priorities will be to strengthen Wales' pack and the 54-cap international is a player who will surely be considered. At 6ft 2in and over 16 stone, Moriarty is a physical presence who hits hard in the tackle and is also a carrier. It's a clean slate for the 25-year-old backrower who has swapped the Dragons for Cardiff . Rewind the clock to 2021 and Basham earnt rave reviews for his performances for Wales in defeats against New Zealand and South Africa. At the time Basham was tipped to reach the heights but he has never quite achieved that consistency of performance and has not represented Wales since facing England back in February 2024. But Basham will hope his move to Cardiff can help him add to his tally of 17 international caps. Basham is an explosive and dynamic carrier capable of making significant post-contact metres, while he is also very effective in the wide channels. Openside flanker is one position where there is strength in depth in Wales with the likes of Jac Morgan, Tommy Reffell, Josh Macloed, James Botham and Basham, among others, fighting for the shirt. One thing which is in Basham's favour is the fact he can cover the backrow and that he arguably brings something different to the other loose forwards in contention. His carrying and x-factor moments are his points of difference but he needs to achieve a level of consistency at his new club if he is to resurrect his international career. The 29-year-old hasn't figured for Wales since the 2024 Six Nations but his decision to leave Harlequins and sign for the Dragons is likely to open the door for him. Lewis was once a regular in the Wales squad and is a hugely experienced player, having won 57 caps for his country. Tighthead prop is arguably the weakest position in Welsh rugby so if Lewis can perform for the Dragons there is a significant chance he will return to the Test match arena in the 2025/26 season. Lewis was in and out of the Harlequins side but as long as he can stay fit he should get plenty of game-time at Rodney Parade. His challenge will be locking the Dragons scrum and if he can scrummage well then he has every chance of making Tandy's first Wales squad this autumn. The Scarlets ' decision to sign the 23-year-old is an intriguing one. Only a few years ago Hawkins was viewed as the next big thing and won the first of his five Wales caps against Australia in 2022 before figuring heavily in the 2024 Six Nations. But his decision to leave the Ospreys for Exeter Chiefs cost him a place in Wales' Rugby World Cup squad in 2023 due to the controversial 25-cap law. Hawkins showed glimpses of his potential at Sandy Park but it wasn't all plain sailing at Exeter, with the talented playmaker falling in and out of the squad. However, Hawkins is a gifted footballer and is a player with international potential. What is interesting is the fact the Scarlets have signed him primarily as a number 10 with the majority of his rugby at senior level having come at inside centre. Hawkins is a nice ball player with strong distribution and peripheral vision, while he also has a big boot on him. If Dwayne Peel can get the best out of him then further international caps should follow. The 50-cap Wales international turned his back on Welsh rugby in 2021 when he made the decision to return home to Australia before enjoying a stint at Japanese club NEC Green Rockets. Ball initially called time on his career but has made a U-turn in order to complete a sensational return to the Scarlets. The powerful second-row was a serious player during his first stint in Welsh rugby and was an important figure for both the Scarlets and Wales. Ball is a tighthead lock who gets through a huge amount of unseen dirty work and is a powerful carrier who has the ability to drive into heavy traffic to get over the gainline. There is a general lack of second-rows in Ball's mould in Welsh rugby. Get the latest breaking Welsh rugby news stories sent straight to your inbox with our FREE daily newsletter. Sign up here. If Tandy were to select Ball some might call it a backwards step given his age and we don't yet know if he is the same calibre of player who left Welsh rugby in 2021. But there aren't many second-rows in Wales who can offer what he 33-year-old Ball could in his prime. Don't rule him out. The 25-year-old made a strong start to his international career scoring a try on his Test debut against the All Blacks in 2022. Dyer made a favourable impression during the early stages of his Wales career with his pace and finishing ability along with his aerial game winning favour with both Wayne Pivac and Gatland. But Dyer's form hit the rocks for the Dragons last season and he was left out of both the Six Nations and summer squads. The 23-times-capped wing has fallen behind the likes of Blair Murray, Mason Grady, Ellis Mee, Josh Adams and Keelan Giles in the pecking order. But it is a new era at the Dragons under head coach Filo Tiatia who has strengthened the squad, while it is also a clean slate under Tandy for Wales. He will have to significantly improve his form but he is capable. The powerful Ospreys second-row has had a rough time with injuries over the past couple of seasons, otherwise he would surely have added to his three Wales caps. There is a lack of size and power in the Wales pack but at 6ft 6in and circa 18 stone, Davies would certainly add some grunt. Davies is a second-row with a real nasty edge about him who loves the physical side of things. The 26-year-old is an excellent lineout forward who has a reputation for making a lot of tackles and back in the 2021/22 season Davies nailed 60 tackles out of his first 61 attempts. Injuries have significantly curtailed his progress, so the primary goal for Davies has to be getting a run of games under his belt but the Ospreys are a far better side when he is involved. If he can stay injury-free then there is no reason why he can't break back into the Wales squad given he offers something a little bit different to the other second-row options.
