Shane Lowry and Seamus Power secure top ten finishes as Hovland ends 18-month drought in Tampa

Thomas looked poised to win for the first time since the 2022 US PGA when he played his first 15 holes in seven-under to head Hovland by three shots. But he got caught by the Snake Pit finishing trio at Innisbrook's Copperhead Course and bogeyed the 16th and the 18th to shoot a 66 that left him a shot behind the Norwegian on 10-under. Hovland, who hadn't won since capturing the Tour Championship and the FedEx Cup in 2023, stepped through the door and birdied the 14th, 16th and 17th to lead by two and while he bogeyed the last, his four under 67 gave him his seventh PGA Tour win on 11-under at $1,566,000. Lowry had no luck on the greens and carded a one-under 70 to finish five shots behind Hovland on six-under, tied for eighth with Séamus Power ($245,776 each), whose five-under 66 gave him his first top 10 for seven months. The Offaly man went into the final round tied for fifth, two shots behind Hovland, Nico Echavarria and Jacob Bridgeman. Birdies at the first holes hinted at a great day, but that was as good as it got on the greens as far as birdies were concerned. While he saved par from eight feet at the third and made further saves at the fifth and 10th, he had to watch outside birdie chances stay above ground at the eighth, ninth, 11th, 12th, 13th, 14th and 15th before dropping a shot at the 16th. Lowry will still head to the Masters in good spirits following another top-class performance from tee to green, knowing he only needs an average week with the putter to contend. As for Power, who started six shots off the lead, the West Waterford man hopes his first top 10 since last August's FedEx St Jude Championship will signal an upturn in fortunes. In an event where he made the final group last year only to shoot 76 to slip all the way back to 26th, he cut a swathe through the field and turned in four-under 32 before making another birdie from three feet at the 10th to challenge the lead. While he three-putted the 11th from 20 feet, he brushed in a 15-footer at the 12th and a 22-footer at the 14th to go six-under for the day before dropping a shot at the last after driving into the sand. "I really like the course, got it going today and (it was) almost a really good one," said Power, who is not in the Masters and needs two big weeks in Houston and San Antonio to have a chance. "All in all, there is a lot of good stuff and a step in the right direction." He arrived in Tampa off the back of two missed cuts, and after missing three of his first six to be 98th in the FedExCup standings, he's hoping to get some momentum. "Absolutely," he said. "Golf's funny like that. You get a lot of points in only a handful of your weeks, so maybe this is the start of a good run for me. "Even if it isn't, it's nice to see the work you're putting in show up on the golf course, and that's also the most encouraging and can remove some of that frustration quickly." He can still make the RBC Heritage signature event the week after the Masters via the Aon Top-5, but a win would transform his season and put the Ryder Cup on his radar. "Hopefully I can play my way into Augusta, but right now, I would play the Dominican the week after Augusta and then go from there," he said. "We'll see. Things can change fast in golf, so that's going to be the plan."
