Shane Lowry convinced Augusta National to break rules to celebrate Rory McIlroy's triumph

Rory McIlroy has revealed that Shane Lowry convinced Augusta National to break their rules in the aftermath of the former's Masters triumph. McIlroy, 36, became only the sixth golfer in history to win all four major championships when winning the green jacket for the first time last month after a dramatic play-off with Justin Rose. It was a victory that sparked emotional celebrations, with McIlroy's good friend Lowry among the first to congratulate the Holywood man. And McIlroy has now told of how Lowry went out of his way to ensure that the historic moment was celebrated in style. Speaking to NBC Sports Golf, McIlroy said: "Funny story. When I won Shane Lowry went straight to the sommelier at Augusta National and said: 'I gotta get a couple cases of wine off you'. "They said: 'Mr Lowry, we don't allow people to take wine out of the club'. "He goes: 'No seriously, this is a one-off exception'. So they let him buy one case of 1990 Chateau Lafite Rothschild. So that's what we had that night to celebrate. "That was a very nice gift, he bought it and he brought it over to my rental house that night and we had a few glasses of that - which was very nice." It is not known how much the purchase set Lowry back - but one bottle of 1990 Chateau Lafite Rothschild retails online for over €1,000, so a case of 12, given the likely mark-up at the famous club, must have cost the Offaly man well over €10,000. Lowry, who has had a great start to the season of his own, can certainly afford the expensive gift. The 38-year-old has pocketed $5,743,758 on tour this year thanks primarily to two runner-up finishes in signature events. Both Lowry and McIlroy are back in action this week in the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow Country Club. Get the latest sports headlines straight to your inbox by signing up for free email alerts.
