Congress MP Shashi Tharoor accepted the Indian government’s invitation to lead an all-party delegation to key international capitals. He served as Under-Secretary-General for Communications and Public Information, playing a pivotal role in shaping the UN’s global communication strategy. He was also a candidate for the position of UN Secretary-General in 2006 but was ultimately unsuccessful, losing to Ban Ki-moon. The team’s agenda includes presenting India’s zero tolerance stance on terrorism and providing updates on Operation Sindoor, the military response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that resulted in 26 fatalities. Shashi Tharoor At Odds With Congress? Shashi Tharoor’s appointment to lead the delegation comes amidst internal Congress party tensions. His public endorsement of the government’s military response garnered approval from the ruling party while sparking dissent within his own. Shashi Tharoor’s assertion that the government acted with restraint and precision contradicts the Congress Party’s official stance which criticized the PM Modi government for its lack of transparency concerning the ceasefire agreement and questioned the US’ mediating role. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh, in a recent press briefing, clarified the party’s position, stating, “It is his opinion. When Tharoor saab speaks, it is not the party’s opinion,” distancing the party from Shashi Tharoor’s remarks.
