Shaun Edwards immediately set the tone in uncompromising first Wales meeting

Wales legend Alun Wyn Jones has revealed what Shaun Edwards was really like when he first came into Wales camp.
The iconic lock appeared as a guest on the latest episode of the High Performance podcast with Jake Humphrey, and touched on just how influential Edwards was in Wales' success.
The former rugby league star came into the Wales set-up in 2008 with Warren Gatland and quickly became a fan favourite, making Wales a defensive titan in a trophy-laden period up to 2019.
While the players were aware of Gatland's clear intentions when he first entered camp, Jones has reaffirmed just how significant Edwards' opening words were.
"We came in and we’re like, 'Gats had done his talk, OK, yeah, pretty switched on’," explained Jones on the High Performance podcast.
"Then Shaun comes in and says: ‘Defence is about two things: legalised violence.’ It was a pin-drop moment and everyone was like, ‘OK, we know where we’re going with this,’ and it was meeting one, minute one, stall set."
Legend Jones told a similar story about the 'pin-drop' moment and 'legalised violence' quote on BBC's Scrum V Top Five show in January, but the legendary lock went into greater detail on just how central Edwards was to Wales' glory years.
"With his character and demeanour, Shaun cares a lot about what he does, and I think ultimately he said: ‘I need to prepare you the best I can. If I could do it for you, I’d be out there with you.’ That was the stall set from day one," continued Jones.
"It was night and day. That mentality that was brought in, from what we had and what we needed. We needed the clarity, it needed to be simple, like the game plan we had was relatively simple. It got us an element of success. Were we more expansive, potentially could have had more with the player group we had.
"You look what we achieved in that period of time, you know, going from an ’07 World Cup where we hadn’t got out of the pool stages, it was a huge difference. And it was stripped back: work hard, numbers high, decent kicking game and off we go. And, you marry that with Shaun Edwards."
Edwards' winner mindset, explained by Jones, was epitomised at the weekend following France's win over Ireland in Dublin. With the full-time whistle blown, head coach Fabien Galthie was over the moon with Les Bleus' win, but Edwards was furious that his side had conceded late tries.
Galthie was seen trying to hug Edwards but the Wigan-born coach looked to be absolutely seething. To read more about that, click here.
