Shaun White Shares How One Explosive Luggage Disaster Changed His Travel Routine For Good (Exclusive)

Shaun White seems to always be jetting off on his next bucket list vacation, but the three-time Olympic snowboarding gold medalist, 38, says even in retirement, he's putting his health first while on the road.
Inspired by one travel mess for the ages, he's partnered with (and invested in) the gummy supplement company Grüns, which has become a carry-on essential on his adventures.
Like many pro athletes, White used to use powdered supplements even while traveling. “It's like you bring this big bag of powder and then you have to find some jug or something to mix it up, and it's always getting on my clothes or on my hardware,” White tells PEOPLE during an exclusive interview. “I had a situation where a bag exploded in my packed luggage and just ruined everything. I said there's got to be a better way.”
Now, he shares, he can get his “daily buzz” and make sure he’s “staying on my game” with the convenience of gummies. “I could just grab a bag and jump in the car and head to wherever, if I'm going to the mountain or to the gym. This just really fits my lifestyle,” he adds.
Whether he’s traveling for work or off on his next adventure with fiancée Nina Dobrev, the professional athlete makes sure to follow a routine that helps him prioritize his health.
“As I've gotten older and since recently retiring, I really started to focus on my health, my wellness, how much sleep I'm getting,” he tells PEOPLE. White officially retired from professional snowboarding after the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics.
“My life's just on the road, constantly moving, and you can kind of blame your health on travel,” he continues. “For me to create a plan for myself that I can consistently do while traveling is really huge. Whether there's a gym at the hotel or if not, I bring things with me so I can do a quick, easy workout or something in the room. Or I go rent a bicycle, and go around town.”
While he notes that he does focus on what foods he’s putting into his body, he doesn’t let that limit him when he’s on a trip.
“For me, traveling and eating… I will definitely go eat from the street cart. I'm like, ‘Ooh, let's taste the flavors of this city.’"
Of his partnership with Grüns, White says he loves how the gummy supplements help him maintain balance in his diet so he can eat what he wants on vacation.
“That's one of the things that I really dig about Grüns — it really supports your gut health,” he says, adding that when he’s traveling, “I definitely need something to help balance out my diet and things like that.”
The gummy bears are made with ingredients including fruits and veggies, antioxidants, prebiotics and more than 20 vitamins and minerals. They're also individually packaged, making them easy to stash in luggage or a personal item on the plane.
In fact, White says Grüns has been added to his list of travel essentials, along with a pillow, eye mask and of course, his skateboard.

In addition to his new partnership, White is working on a number of other projects in his retirement. In 2022, he launched his lifestyle brand, Whitespace, which made its fashion week debut in Switzerland in 2024.
He also founded a new competitive sports league, The Snow League, in 2024. It’s making history as the first professional winter sports league dedicated to snowboarding and freeskiing, per their official website.
