AFN President Tonobok Okowa officially confirmed Favour Ofili will not don Nigerian colours again, citing she has gone after Turkey's money. After months of uncertainty, the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) President Tonobok Okowa has finally confirmed Favour Ofili's switch of nationality to Turkey, citing financial enticement. In a press briefing following the conclusion of the Nigerian Championships/Trials in Yabatech, Okowa affirmed Ofili's switch of allegiance and will now don the colours of Turkey. Okowa stated in the briefing that while Ofili is still listed as Nigerian on the World Athletics site, her switch is imminent. "Favour Ofili has been taken by the Turkish Federation," he emotionally revealed. The AFN President further cited financial inducement as the major reason athletes are leaving: “The kind of money they put on the table is not something many athletes would refuse.” There are reports that Turkey offers up to $500,000 as a base payment for top-tier athletes to change nationality. With more Nigerian athletes reportedly set to join Ofili in the Turkey Drain, Okowa made an urgent appeal to the government and private sector sponsors. “We’re pleading for help. The government cannot do it alone. We need more sponsors to keep our athletes at home.” Despite the setback, he praised the new generation of Nigerian male sprinters: “Our boys have come of age. They’re winning in the NCAA and are in top shape. The question is: what are we doing to keep them?” In June this year, news broke out that Ofili and four other top Jamaican athletes had accepted a switch of allegiance to Turkey in a bid for the country to win medals at the Los Angeles Olympics 2028. With her nationality change now confirmed, This means the elite sprinter will not compete at the World Championships in Tokyo this September, as she must observe World Athletics mandatory three-year probation before representing her new country.
