'She's a lot tougher than me' Craig Casey's 'inspiring' sister's injury puts things into perspective

We can all be quick sometimes to fall into the 'Why me?' mentality when something goes awry in our lives, but Craig Casey's sister put things back into perspective for him. Craig, 26, and his sister Aimee, 22, are like two peas in a pod; They're each other's only sibling. So, it was imaginably difficult for him to watch her endure tough times after undergoing scoliosis surgery in 2018. At that time, the rugby player himself was in recovery from a serious knee surgery. Now, seven years later, Craig has had to go under the knife once more while Aimee required a second spinal surgery. Speaking to the Irish Independent, Craig said Aimee's injury and recovery have put his own into perspective that it 'isn't that bad', adding that his younger sister is 'a lot tougher' than he is. The 26-year-old, who is in a long-term relationship with his girlfriend Jenny Clein, said Aimee has been an 'inspiration' to him as he's watched her 'fight' and witnessed first hand 'how tough she is'. The Casey household was a sport-mad one. The siblings' mum Sinéad represented Ireland in gymnastics and fostered the love of the sport in Aimee. Meanwhile, Craig followed his dad Ger down the rugby route. Unfortunately, Aimee no longer competes in gymnastics as Craig recalled she had to 'learn how to walk' again after her spinal surgery. 'Thankfully, she is doing well now. She’s a fighter, for sure. She was definitely competitive growing up as well, never gave me anything easy,' he told the publication, before gushing of his sister's abilities: 'She was probably the better athlete growing up. She was a gymnast who had won over 20 All-Ireland medals. 'She was probably faster than me growing up as well, which always kinda sickened me! We always went into battles with each other, but we are extremely close.' Craig went on to say that he has 'a lot of love' for his little sister, explaining that he'll 'always have her back' no matter how tough the time she's going through is. 'I suppose during the dark days when you’re thinking, "Oh Jesus, my knee isn’t going too well", you go home and you see her learning how to walk again,' he said. Craig commended how 'tough' and 'mentally strong' Aimee is, which 'gives me an extra perspective of going out on the field doing what we all love'.
