Shubman Gill entered his name in the history books on Friday (June 20) by becoming the fifth Indian cricketer to score a century in his first Test as captain. The 25-year-old right-handed batter was appointed as India’s 37th Test captain on May 24, 2025, when chief selector Ajit Agarkar announced India’s 18-member squad for a five-match Test series against England, and he made his Test captaincy debut on June 20. During the third session of the first day’s play at Headingley in Leeds, Gill crossed the 100-run mark and joined Virat Kohli in an elite list.
Kohli also scored a century (115) for India in his first Test as captain.
Vijay Hazare was the first Indian to score a century on his Test debut as captain, and he was followed by Sunil Gavaskar, Dilip Vengsarkar, and Kohli.

In his first Test as captain, Gill came out to bat at No. 4 and crossed the 100-run mark in 140 balls with the help of 14 fours.
He is overall the eighth Indian batter after Vijay Manjrekar, MAK Pataudi, Dilip Vengsarkar, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, and Jaiswal to score a century in Tests at Headingley.
