Star Indian opening batter Shubman Gill entered his name in the history books on Saturday (April 12) by becoming the first batter to score 2000 runs in the Indian Premier League for the Gujarat Titans. The 25-year-old right-handed batter needed 53 runs on Saturday to cross the 2000-run mark for the Ahmedabad-based franchise in the world’s richest franchise cricket league, and he achieved the objective by taking a single on the fifth ball of the 11th over of the ongoing IPL 2025 match between GT and Lucknow Super Giants at Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow. In GT’s fourth league match played against Sunrisers Hyderabad at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad, he remained unbeaten on 61 runs from 43 balls. Gill, who made his IPL debut in the 2018 season for Kolkata Knight Riders, was signed for Rs 8 crore by Gujarat Titans ahead of the IPL 2022 mega auctions. In his first season for the Ahmedabad-based team, he scored 483 runs in 16 matches and played a big part in the team’s title win. In the second season, with the help of three centuries and four fifties, he scored 890 runs and won the Orange Cap. Gill was appointed as GT captain ahead of IPL 2024, and in his first season as captain of the team, he amassed a total of 426 runs in 12 matches but was not able to help his side qualify for the playoffs. The Punjab-born cricketer was retained for Rs 16.50 crore by GT ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auctions. In the list of leading run scorers in the IPL for Gujarat Titans, Gill is followed by Sai Sudharsan. The Tamil Nadu-based cricketer has more than 1300 runs to his name in 31 matches played so far for GT.
